B0395BAA-9E9F-4BDB-9208-54ED211720E9

My gift to all my backers of my Dank Zine will get one of these limited print Milky Christmas stickers as my gift to them. Make sure you are backing by the end of November to get one of these stickers as thats the only way to get them. These will not be in the shop afterwards & are strictly just for the backers!

Dank Art

On American Thanksgiving, LordBBH decided he was going to leap headfirst into playing Willow for NES which happens to be one of my fave RPG’s for the system as well as one game on my “to finish” list. Though I am not the biggest fan of Willow the movie (I was far too young to really appreciate the movie as a kid) I am a huge fan of the game and made amusing Dank Art along BBH’s frustrations and trials with the game. BBH got halfway thru before realizing it was going to take much longer to get thru it, so he shut it off and gave everyone the THANK they were waiting for and played a 1CC Credit of Willow for Arcade.

Macaw45 is going thru his collection of DOS Shareware games which range from palaces from Russia, Spain, Italy and Japan. For those who don’t know, back in the days of DOS people would dial into BBS’s and download shareware to “try it” before buying it or stores would have compilation disks of these programs to help sell more parts of the game. This was one way new or indie game devs would get their games out into the market and hopefully be their big break into the world of game development. You gotta think that there’s probably hundreds of thousands of games that are like this just floating around in some archival space on the internet and it’s part of Macaw’s ongoing project to discover and preserve the best of these games. Often these games seem too simple or even silly when you first start them up but often if you play them a little bit longer there’s something that sticks out about them that’s attractive or interesting. That’s a typical Macaw stream these days so check out some of the real ripe stuff he’s been unearthing from the dankest depths of the shareware market.

Next month it’s going to be all about PJ in my Dank Zine so I have been going by his Dragon View & FF9 streams to see what he’s been up to. For me, its the Final Fantsy 9 playthru he’s doing right now because when that game came out I didn’t give it the attention or credit it needed. I think everyone has an opinion about which Final Fantasy is the best and which are not, but I think this Final Fantasy was a true gem and the last of its kind. It’s charming and it has all the signature fantasy elements that made the series what it is from black mages to airships to special abilities like “EAT” it’s there. Often you don’t know how good you got it till its years later and someone shows you what you’ve been missing out on and I feel like I missed out hard with Final Fantasy 9.

PJ Stickers are in!

Hot off the presses are all the backer reward stickers featuring PJ’s sub emotes! Make sure you are subscribed to the Dank Zine before November 30th to get yourself a copy of the Zine featuring his interview as well as a free set of these stickers. Also, backers will get a special bonus sticker for just being awesome and backing my Patreon. Thank you always gu

I also have a sneak peek of what next month’s cover will look like! This months cover is done my Anthony Brennan who was actually featured in the first ever Dank Zine for his papercrafts and his passion for dressing up as Pro Wrestlers at conventions. Anthony is also a skilled illustrator and has had his work featured almost everywhere. I asked him to draw up something nice that reflected who PJ was without it catching on fire or glitching out. Thank you, Anthony!

That first week in November

Ultimoice went back to playing regular EarthBound again but he was playing for a World Record in PJ% which has a different set of requirements then a regular Speedrun of EarthBound. You can catch video of Ultimoice here making that World Record. Keep checking back to my blog as I am working on an interview with Ultimoice for an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine!

LordBBH had a weekend featuring his “Viewers Choice Extravaganza” where followers can sign up their favourite game to be entered into a random raffle draw to be played. I always love BBH’s extravaganza as the likelihood that a really good game coming up is way higher than the randomness you’ll get with a regular Monday Roulette. Also, BBH is getting a lot of fantastic Dank Art made by not just me but by MakotoTruth and Dasyati to name a few. Check them out on Twitter & follow them as they make great Dank Art as well!

Macaw45 wasn’t around much on the weekend, however he is the feature streamer for the November issue of my Dank Zine. I did an interview with him were we talked about his obsession for the more rare and obscure games out there and what sort of games he’s into if you were to stumble into his stream. I had a two-hour Zine packaging giveaway stream where I was giving out free stickers that feature Macaw’s sub icons and I was happy to discover that a lot of his fans are from all over the world. So that means someone in Sweden is going to get a bunch of GUTS stickers from his stream & possibly put them all over their car & it will be the GUTS MACHINE or something like that. Please send me any and all photos of your Dank Stickers on things once you get them! Please be careful when sticking them on people or pets! (Please, don’t put them on your pets).

Nothing I love more than this smug AF Carpet Dank Art I did for Aquas recently. It’s like you’re throwing a hug party for the first time at your parents place and you’re not sure if you’re dressed right or if the right people will show up or that person you like will be there. Meanwhile, good buddy Carpet is all classed up with her turban and magic carpet dapper as hell  leaning back all cool saying “Hey, don’t worry about it, duuuuuuuude,” cause really, you going to be alright.

PRINTS PRINTS PRINTS

EF43FC47-C7C5-4E53-B599-DAE780ADBF47.jpegNew Print! Phantasy Bar 2 is now available for sale on Red Bubble. Right now I am using them for quick sales of my larger pieces that I am working on. If you want to get a copy of this print, make sure you click on the image and check out thru Red Bubble.

DANK ZINE

My eight issue of my Dank Zine has been shipped to all my Patreon backers! They should expect these gems to arrive in their mailbox over the next few days. This months issue is my biggest yet with 50 pages! The cover is done by Sarah Joncas who is not only one of my best friends, but she’s also an AMAZING artist. I also have interviews with Macaw45, Fantastic Planet on when he was banned from Twitch, and a few players who will be participating in this weekend’s 1CC Marathon starting on Friday. As always there is a lot of crazy Dank Art plus backer stickers for those who have been supporting me over the Patreon.

Like always, if you want to back my Zine please check out my Patreon page. If you just want to sub for one issue you totally can, if you want custom Dank Art with your Zine you can, if you just like the project and want to donate $5 to help get someone some freebies in the mail you can do that too! I love giving away things as much as I can with this Zine and it really comes down to everyone’s love of the games and supporting those who play them.

1AA87C9E-D9B4-4E17-ABDE-A02CDB797FA6

Issue Seven featuring the SHMUP crew at STGWeekly, trap15 and an article written by Icarus about Battle Garegga is now available for sale in my Dank Shop now that the new issue is out. I always stress that you save more money backing the Patreon as that includes your shipping plus you’re going to get freebies and stickers if I am packing the envelopes. With my Dank Shop I don’t have as much control yet on packaging those orders as they are made to order and you’ll be paying for shipping on top of the Zine itself. Still, it’s the best way that I can get my Zines out for the time being.

As you might know I have passed 60 subscribers for my Dank Zine. I am literally 20 subs away from my goal of 80 where I can start shopping the Zine out to other printers. Saying that, my Dank Shop might be changing, so if you were thinking of ordering back issues try to do it soon as I might not be able to re-print a short run of old issues with my new printers.

Coming up for Christmas I have interviews with Owlnonomous with his Owlcade, his passion for collecting pinball and arcade machines as well as a behind the scenes look at a real arcade museum and what it’s like to be working the dream job: Retro Arcade Manager. I also have a very special BBH Christmas sticker as a special gift to all my backers for that issue. Also, I sat down with PJ recently to discuss his interview in my January issue. I have my hands full for the next few weeks so keep visiting my blog to get updates as they happen.

Also, if you want to contribute your own Dank Art or want to write something for my Dank Zine I am looking for submissions! Please email me to inquire.

Making up for lost time- June & up to now

Life update

IMG_3205.JPGMost of you know by now I have two incredible cats as well as an incredible bunny. My one cat, Scoot, has been with me since 2003 and has been showing signs of age, but still holds her spot in my place as queen. She hasn’t been in the best of health the last few weeks and the vet is advising me not to go with forwards with surgery as she’s so old. I’ve been keeping her comfortable and giving her medicine to help her deal. Between getting my Zine together, demands at work and everything else I have slightly neglected my blog. However, Scoot is a fighter & is showing positive signs of improvement. Sometimes you just need to get your life in check first and that’s what I have been doing for the last few weeks.

In saying that, there is a HUGE backlog of Dank Art to upload to the site, so please bear with me. If you can’t bear, maybe possum it.

Dank Art

Macaw45 always plays thru a wild selection of games and over the past few weeks it was nothing but weird games from ancient systems to crazy PS1 games. For a while, he was on a huge builder game streak where he focused on a bunch of games that had something to do with building. One of the more delightful moments from those streams was when Macaw was playing the Sims and had a John Romero character muddling around the house. Things were alright until a fire broke out in the kitchen and John wanted to eat a pizza more then to call the fire department. This was one of my more fave moments from the building segments of his streams.

There were a lot of mech games, a Workout game, even a silly hamster sim  so you never know what you’re going to get until you tune in.

MURPHAGATOR Finally has his arcades hooked up and capturing the right way so he’s back with his regular runs of Beat-em’ups. He’s been playing a lot of Final Fight & Vigalante which I am super embarrassed to stream as I am crazy terrible at the PC Engine port of Vigalantie. Murph has told me it’s not a big deal as it’s a really tough game but you don’t even comprehend how difficult some of these game are if you’re always sitting there watching someone who can just cut thru the game like butter.

LordBBH has been getting a bunch of very good spins with his Mame Roullete Mondays as well as getting a few breaks with his request raffles when he holds them. I think the streams I am starting to enjoy the most of his are when it’s a raffle because the chance of a good game coming up is higher which means my chances of making some memeorable Dank Art is higher. Really it comes down to a combo of what game, BBH’s reaction playing it and how the chat is responding to the stream for me to really make stand out Dank Art otherwise I might as well just google games & draw things at random. BBH has a good community as well so it’s nice to come into the chat and be welcomed and see other people drawing art to the games as well. If you draw your own art I would LOVE  to share it on my blog so please post it and I’ll find you :3

Adventures in Collecting

Greg and I drove out to cambridge just after my birthday for one of these game swap shows. I just got my Turbo Duo so I was hoping there would be someone there selling Hu cards. Boy did I hit the jackpot and one of the sellers who I met at a previous show brough ALL his Hu cards hoping that I would be there. Heh, I kinda made a sad face when he told me he usually has a bunch but didn’t bring them last time.

Greg picked up a bunch of games as well but really was after an Xbox 360 controller on the cheap but there were none to be found at this thing surprisingly. This event was a lot smaller then the shows we normally attend and I think I liked that. They didn’t have any game tournaments going on, just straight up collectors selling off their stuff. There were a few artists who were there as well doing nerdy cross-stitch which I really liked as I used to do that kind of stuff when I has a little kid. I used to stitch out entire covers of X-Men comics for my Home Economics class.

Dank Zine

img_2636I have wrapped up my fourth issue of my Dank Zine and for this month I am happy to announce I have branched out and found more content to help diversify the entire magazine. I called up on the help of artist Cyraptor to help put together a beautiful cover for this month and you can check out his stuff by clicking here and here. I also have gotten Aquas to write an article on Ghosts n Demons, a fan game on PC that pays homage to the Ghouls n Ghosts series. Aquas has already been helping me out behind the scenes with interviews, but I’ve been bugging him to write this article for a month so make sure you check it out. I’m also super happy that I have friends like Trap0xf who can double check all the game info so that I’m crediting the proper developers and creators for each game listed in the Zine. We are making a really fun community with this project and I am very happy with the direction we’re heading in. I never expected I’d be at this point already, but there’s no stopping me now.

Amazingly Dead Flip had a little give away because I sent him a pile of Zines with his feature interview inside last month. Check out this mug’s mug mugging these books!

IMG_0032.JPG

Owlnonymous with buddy Cathoderaze were seen in the arcade with an issue as well! This is possibly one of my most fave “In the Wild” photos to date of people with their Zine. If you get a photo of you with your Zine, PLEASE send it to me as I LOVE seeing you enjoy my Dankness.

Be part of my project and back my Patreon so you can get your issue of Dank Zine every month in the mail! It’s the best way to collect my work as it stays clean and cosy on your bookshelf or it’s ready to read if you leave it in the bathroom! Keep me making Dank Art by backing my Patreon today!

End of the Week DANK ART Wrap up June 16 2017

DANK ZINEimg_2636Woa! My Dank Zine is really starting to pick up and now I have almost twice as many subscribers! Thank you so much! I have put together a little shop page on my blog where it has all the info except for the info that isn’t there. You can either back my Patreon or buy issues one by one (though you’ll save $$$ with the shipping if you back the Patreon). I will also post up any posters, prints and any special sales of individual work on that page so please check it out!

Legionnaires Arcade @Chuboh

Chuboh was playing himself in an arcade game called Legionnaires and since I have been following him he’s shaved off his beard & it’s fully grown back already lol. Chuboh plays a lot of fun stuff from very obscure arcades to Amiga games on his stream. I for one am all about more people streaming older Amiga stuff as that was a system I always heard my friends talk about but never really got a chance to experience it for myself. I currently have a very secret collection of old computers though I had to sell off a few to make space in my place. For now, emulation is the best way to go when it comes to most of the classic computer games out there for me.

Trap’s birthday is today! I’m sure he’s 200 years old & only ages once every quarter century due to a special osmosis process that only he and few other people from his home planet are capable of doing. Ok thats not true but what is true is that it is his birthday and I hope he gets roaring dunk & wakes up the next day hugging a trash bin. That’s the sign of a perfect birthday. Now is also a great time to catch Trap streaming because he has been doing a lot of it this past week so if you want to see live streams from actual arcade equipment, Trap’s the one to follow.

img_2566

Combatribes Arcade @MURPHAGATOR

Speaking about streaming from actual arcade cabs, MURPHAGATOR finally has a capture coming from his cabs meaning his reign of ghetto-cams are over for now. Murph will be featured in an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine about streaming from Arcade cabs as well as Trap as owning an arcade cab has always been a project/dream in itself for me. I’m sure there are lots of people out there too who want to know more about getting into collecting arcades or who do it already and enjoy reading that stuff.

img_2605

Wonderboy 3 Lion Suit @Goatistream

Goati was playing thru Wonderboy 3 on Sunday when I was catching up on a lot of Dank Art commissions and I sat down and drew him this Dank Lion suit. Goati is featured in an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine where I sit down with him and talk about the Megadrive, Amiga games, Europe and his online Twitch event, Nintendon’t. I participated last year and I hope I can again this year and it’s basically a fun few days of non-stop streams featuring everything that isn’t Nintendo. Registration is up right now so if this is something that you’d like to take part in, please follow Goati and read up on the event on his Twitch page.

Macaw45 has been on a huge building high for a few weeks now exploring such games like A-Train, The Sims & even this adorable garden/dating sim for Japanese Windows 95 called ___. They apparently they made this a lewd dating sim at first but the game proved to be very popular with everyone that they made a “safe” non-lewd version of the game for everyone to enjoy. Funny how that worked backwards. I totally missed the stream where Macaw was playing thru Sim Earth which is one of my top games as a kid but even with a strategy guide open he couldn’t figure it out. I feel like often I am the only person who fully understands how this game works, so I’ll probably show off how to play this game on a upcoming Sunday Stream. Oh yes, there was Smash TV as well,

I personally enjoy it when LordBBH gets a fighting game on Roulette because I enjoy making Dank Art to the fighters the best. I also enjoy all the cute and then more tragically silly elements to a game as well which is why you’ll see Dank Art for those first. I should play up on a few of my fave fighters so if a viewers choice comes up or if he’s taking requests I could suggest some cool games with really cool characters I want to sketch. Out of all my BBH Dank Arts, I have to say I like the Victory Road one the best cause it was rather unexpected and rather amazing.

Collecting

img_2521My wall of systems is growing! I recently added a Turbo Duo to my classic console collection as well as finding a really good beater shelf to stick them all on. At least things are starting to look a bit more put together then how it was before. Also a new system means all new games to collect!

This is why if you have been tuning into my streams this 2017 year that I have been playing thru so many PC-Engine games on my emulator as I wished to know which games were going to be worth my money. When it comes to buying games I am mostly just interested in playing them, so I’m not about getting things in sealed packages or original anything. If I can, sure but it’s not important. I should go a bit more into depth with the story behind my Duo over the weekend when I try to play catch up on a few things.

Just in time for the weekend, more Dank Art updates!

Take it easy, Trojan Arcade @SRKFunkdoc

Funkdoc is back to streaming 1CC requests for his subscribers and most recently he picked up the arcade version of Trojan. Most people know Trojan for its NES release as it used to be a popular game for speed runners, but the arcade version to me looks a lot harder from my perspective. It took him a while, but Funkdoc was able to get that 1CC recently on stream! Congratulations & great to see you back streaming!

IMG_2249

Twin Eagle @Trap0xf

Trap was streaming more Twin Eagle on his arcade set up in his apartment when I made this Dank Art for him. This game was one of the first arcade games back in 1988 to use digital sampling in both its graphics and its soundtrack. I doubt Trap is playing the euro version of this board because I only found that release has some horrible iconic “engrish”  where instead of saying “Game over” it will instead say: “The player game is abortion”
I also love drawing a two headed eagle for this game :p

IMG_2251

Weaponlord for SFC @Macaw45

Macaw45 has been addicted to building games all week such as Afterlife and Sim City 2000, but he did manage to dig up this SFC copy of Weaponlord which he played thru on Saturday. The art to me is very 90’s stylized and is possibly some of the best backgrounds I’ve seen in a fighting game like this. The crazy thing about this fighter is if you lose a fight you can continue, but if your opponent performs a finishing move & kills you it’s game over. Yup. Even if you are all the way at the end of the game and that happens you’re stuck going all the way to the beginning again. However it works the same way if you perform finishing moves on the characters in the game. Killing them takes them out indefinitely so you do not have to fight them again.

IMG_2252Good buddy Greg made off with Murph’s Poison last weekend too. As soon as he saw her he was all “OH SHE’S PERFECT!” & handed me $20. Give her a good home, dude!

LordBBH had his crazy Viewers Choice Extravaganza last weekend on the same day as my crazy street festival I was promoting over social media. I’m lucky to have an apartment right in the middle of the actual street festival itself, so I kept taking breaks from covering that event to come in and paint Dank Art for his stream. Not all of these were done in a day as BBH decided to extend the extravaganza to Monday as well. My personal fave is the derp Bubs in the bottom corner because he’s just too darn cute :3

Sunday Streams IMG_2339I did a little retrospective on one of my fave arcade games, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs as well as showing off a bit of the Sega CD version of C&D. Let’s just say that if you love the arcade for its amazing high action Beat-em’up style and amazing music you are NOT going to find that in the Sega CD game. In fact on surface it’s a very poor game for the franchise where all you do is drive around in the cadillac moving the story along as if you were interacting with the actual comic book itself. I’m not knocking the concept of this game as I can see the potential, but it’s just too repetitive and hard to actually see what you should be shooting or not. Some stages drag on forever such as the opening level where most likely you’ll die & keep dying without making any progress at all. The only way I could get thru the first stage was to scum-save the entire way only to find out that the rest of the stages are just more driving but with slightly changed targets to shoot and also the later stages are not as long giving you a sense that you are making progress. It’s not a hot mess like some other Sega CD games that came out at the time, but the only thing it has going for it is the story itself which is hard to enjoy when you get to the actual game which is driving & shooting.

Mothers Day!IMG_2344Earthbound was released over 22 years ago a few days ago so I celebrated it with this image of Master Belch with a few Mr Saturns. As one of my favourite games out there, Earthbound has always been a huge part of my young life and for years it was a game I longed to have a copy that I can play on an HD TV & take anywhere. We actually got that a few years ago with not just Earthbound but Earthbound Beginnings, the NES game that came out before Earthbound. However fans are still waiting for the 3rd game in the series, Mother 3, to see a North American launch and will possibly continue to hopelessly wait for nothing to happen.

With a great game like Mother 3 and its fanbase being ignored, its disappointing that projects like a Bubsy remake/rebranding is happening. I’ll just reiterate the point I made in several tweets on this topic that Bubsy was always a terrible game that had one goal and that was to take your money away and its disappointing that companies will remake garbage ideas to sell back to a new generation of consumers who are unaware of the past but invested in the memes for reason of memes. You’re always going to see things like this sadly as properties such as Mother hold a little more value than Bubsy.

Bumbling birthdays and other celebrations

It was my birthday and I’ve had such a crazy week recovering from my back injury, seeing family and just getting a whole lot of work done for my jobs. I held a super cool contest on my twitter where I asked my followers to draw me their own Dank Art from their own favourite games and tweet them at me! It was really fun to see all the dank work come in so thank you very much to everyone who participated. I actually didn’t choose the winners (if it was up to me everyones a winner) so instead I asked the oldest friend I have, Greg. Winners of my Dank Art contest would either receive a free issue of my Dank Zine or a limited edition art print of one of my pieces. Here are the winners!

Congratulations to @CyberGunk  and @reccanti for your lovely Dank Art! You both win issues of this month’s Dank Zine & I will be contacting you shortly to get your shipping address. Thank you so much to everyone who participated and drew me Dank Art. I love looking at your work and I’d like to encourage others to get into it and start drawing and painting on Twitch or simply do what I do and draw to your favourite streamers. Thank you again and thank you for all your wonderful art :3

DANK ZINE

image

OMG the THIRD ISSUE of my Zine is being printed right now and it’s all about Pinball, plushies and of course the Dank Art you know and love. I got to speak with the pinhead of pinball himself, Dead Flip about his love of the game, his story of how he got into streaming and what sort of things he’s up to. I also got to speak with Eyes5 who is an incredible seamstress and dressmaker who is known in the gaming community for her plushies! I own a few plushies from Eyes myself and I will say they are some of the most special huggable things I have. If you want to get this issue I’ll have them up for grabs in my online store once they have shipped. In the meantime you can go back my Patreon and subscribe to my Dank Zine where you can get all my interviews, Dank Art and writings once a month delivered to your mail box.

Dank Art

Macaw45 got back into playing a bunch of fun SuperFamicom games after spending a day discovering this one explorer game. The explorer game was really interesting where you were some 16th century guy trying to set up trade routes and discover the world and all the unique items around the globe. If you are looking for some obscure games, Macaw has it. He also started up this one game called Stealth where it was set in the Vietnam war and you have to find enemy snipers in the forest while not taking damage in a turn based action JRPG style. If I had seen the box I’d probably pass it up myself but the game had some really neat elements to it after Macaw gave it a few goes. The best game he played thru was Super Keirin where you play as a professional gambler who bets on bike races at the velodrome in town and you spend your money upgrading your apartment and life with goodies you buy from your winnings. I saw him play thru this game once before maybe two years ago when I first started following Macaw & I bought the game from his playthru alone. Since I just bought a Super Famicom of my own I can finally attempt to do runs of this game myself, though it will be hard as I don’t read Japanese. This is a must for anyone who wants to pick up a game for a fan translation as its super addictive like Harvest Moon but in a lot of ways better.

LordBBH is having his Viewers Choice Extravaganza this Saturday and made the announcement during his Monday MAME Roulette stream. Since it’s been a rather busy week for me I only have a few BBH Dank Arts to share, but I did mail out a bunch of special BBH-themed Dank Arts to six of my lucky twitter followers who happened to see my contest. I’m always looking to give out my Dank Art to help brighten the day, so if you want to try your luck and see if you can win one make sure you watch my Twitter. As I have been super productive with my Zine I will be having a HUGE contest soon where I will be giving out free issues of the Zine as well as posters and so on! I love giving gifts so make sure you’re watching my twitter so you can win.

Aquas had his 3,000 follower special and decided he was going to do a 24 hour stream where he would play thru a bunch of his favourite games. As I was crazy busy I tuned in when I could and lucky for me I was watching when he was doing his Contra 3 runs and when he was playing a few PC Engine titles such as Air Zonk. Yes! Aquas was doing speed runs in a marathon stream because he’s a beast. I actually got a chance to sit down with Aquas and talk a bit about him for an upcoming issue of Dank Zine.

img_2076I keep talking about how much of an old Beat’em-up fan I am so whenever MURPHAGATOR has a stream going where he’s doing a run of them I’m going to race over to my computer & watch. I never really got into Final Fight when I was a kid as I was a Streets of Rage kind of girl, but I used to thin Final Fight was very progressive for having Poison who was a bad-guy & a woman. Well, I thought she was a woman because it turns out she is really a trans-woman which they say they did to get around the whole idea that punching women is a bad thing. I don’t think switching the gender changes anything, but it is cool that Poison is the first popular and openly trans-gender video game character out there. When I was a little kid I used to think that Poison could be on any of those talk shows when they did the whole “I used to be a zero but now I’m a hero” where they would pit a bully to come on the show and they’d come face to face to the nerdy kid they hurt all thru school and it’s one of those “oOOoOh Look at me now, bitch!” moments. I used to watch those shows and think maybe that could be me when I get older as I always thought of myself of being very plain, unattractive and nerdy due to the amount of bullying I went thru myself. Poisons of the world unite and take back the beautiful streets one right-hook after spin-kick!

Taking the A-Train to fail town with @Goati

The next issue of my Dank Zine will feature this guy here, Goati who hails from Rome Italy. Goati is in the middle of playing every Megadrive game out there which is a challenging feat as there’s a lot. I used to think I knew Sega games until I interviewed Goati but my knowledge is peanuts next to this guy. The best things about following the retro community are the diverse global connections we share within it. I now have friends all over the world just from streaming on Twitch and thats a cool feeling. Rumour has it that Goati is getting ready to start up another Nintendon’t event, so if you wanna get into that event make sure you contact him.

Birthday Stuff

My friends Sarah and Greg came over for my birthday and we got MAME working on my iMac!! The other cool thing was Sarah & I got to go to my favourite place, Mountsburg. It’s a Raptor sanctuary and I have been coming here ever since I was born so I have a very close and personal attachment for the park. When I was a little girl we had so many hawks, eagles and vultures that I could see without even leaving my house. I used to play games with my mom where we would count how many Birds of Prey we found just by driving around. That’s not the case now as it’s very rare to see these birds.

I’ve always been especially fond of raptors and owls and when I was 5 my grandmother got me the book, Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat. Mowat was her favourite author and I think she new him as at that time (the 1930’s) everyone knew everyone in Windsor Ontario. Mowat was the sort of guy who was very in tune with nature and what we should do about preserving it.

It really was one of the best days so far of 2017 for me. I don’t get many chances to see my friends or go for nature walks up on the escarpment, so when I get to do both it’s a real treat for me. I’m so glad I have such great friends who have stuck by me forever.

Here’s the special Birthday moment I shared with Greg, Sarah and a little shout out to my good pal Tony who wanted to be there but needed to be elsewhere. I was thinking about you and the family all weekend, buddy- so no worries and i’ll see you soon :3

Maybe this time I’ll get it right

Stupid me took a spill down my stairs last week. All the way down the stairs on my ass. I hurt my back again and was out for the entire long weekend(booooooo). It hurt a lot, but I managed to get some work done, just nothing for my blog.

In saying that, there’s a lot to talk about! The big news is that this Friday is my birthday and I am having a contest. Just draw me your own Dank Art of your favourite game, tweet it at me before Saturday at 11:59 pm you can win a free issue of my Dank Zine! Already a subscriber? If you already back my patreon, you can win a print of the poster I made for LordBBH for his 1CCBBH event he held last weekend. I originally said Friday, but since I’m so late updating my blog I decided to extend the date to the last possible minute. The winner will be chosen on my stream in some sort of ceremony- most likely me dancing around & clapping my hands thanking you for making my day.

Speaking about my Dank Zine, you still have until the end of this month to get in for the Third Issue featuring a player-profile with pinball’s pinhead Deadflip. This guy from Chicago is helping to make Twitch a better place with his pinball streams. I also got a chance to ask the talented Eyes5 from Metroidhat.com fame a few questions on a few plushie projects she has on the go. Plus you get pages of Dank Art to enjoy! Every issue keeps getting better so make sure you back the patreon to get yours.

DANK ART

LordBBH had his first BBH1CC-athon last weekend on May 20th and 21st where his plans were to 1 Credit Clear from a selection of games. It’s all titles that he’s familiar with, as well as a few risk-taking titles to keep it interesting (Space Harrier!). I made a cool poster to help promote it plus it was an excuse to make a poster! If you want the poster, you can buy it here!

Since I was a scrub & I missed so many blog updates I’m just going to dump the all the Dank Art that has accumulated over the weeks by streamer so that people can find the ones they want and enjoy them.

BBH’s player profile is featured in the May issue of Dank Zine where I sit down with him and talk a bit of what it was like being a kid when arcade games were cool, what it’s like to stream MAME Arcade games on twitch and a few of his top picks for those looking to get into playing arcades. If you want to get an issue with BBH’s interviewI set up a way where you can get back issues made to print here.

Macaw played thru a strange bunch of dank building games that were from all over the place. German Windows 95 stuff, DOS games and even these strange train -city builders for the PC-98. There was a day he streamed SIM Isle attempts and the music in that game is quite excellent. You’ll probably never see anyone else show this much passion for really obscure stuff

Macaw also streamed thru this crazy Sci-Fi adventure game called Zeta for the PC-98 in a crazy stream that went well over 9 hours. I remember almost a year ago when he was showing off the box to this game along with a few others he picked up in an online auction. It’s a very stylised space drama where a team goes to investigate the ruins of a failed experiment into the psyche that gets really twisted at the end. Macaw played thru the entire game only to reveal that it was only a build up to show off what he was really excited about getting which was its follow-up sequel titled Nirvana. There’s a lot of twist for all the plot points in both games, so if you have the time go check it out.

img_1195I’ve been following Abs for almost a year now and back before he had a lot of streamers my buddy Aquas told me to go follow him as he was starting to play thru Earthbound which is one of my favourite games. Abs now primarily streams in the mornings and from Monday to Friday playing thru SNES games, so check him out if you’re into 16bit goodness. I made this Wolverine Dank Art the morning he was playing thru the SNES game which Abs then turned around and made into “official Dank Box Art”. Good stuff, Abs!

img_1424

Trap played some Twin Eagle on his candy cabs one weekend which was really cool. He now lives in a seabed of arcades which is kinda cool. He showed me photos of his apartment & the only surface that wasn’t carpet or arcade machine was this ironing board I think he forgot to put away. Anyway Trap is living one of my dreams which is to own several cool arcade machines and to have sort of a mini arcade set up in the home. I’m looking forwards to working on something cool with Trap for my zine in the upcoming months, so make sure you stay tuned for that one. I also have another pinball issue coming up where I am going to be talking to a few cool pinball collectors and how they live with such a crazy hobby.

1,000 Viewer Special

I started streaming over 6 years ago to celebrate playing video games with my friends in a social and engaging way. However, it’s only been rather recent in the last two years that I have been streaming more frequently. I recently just hit 1,000 followers.

Yay! I guess thats an achievement. I was never really sure if I wanted to do anything more then just share how much fun video games are with people when it comes to streaming. This year things have sort of changed as I have my Dank Zine, my art, and so many cool friends that I have made just by streaming on twitch. Thank you so much for sticking by me and being my friend. For the next six years lets just keep streaming and sharing more fun moments online :3

I got so busy this week I thought I’d never make it back

All last week I was knee-deep in my history textbooks and clippings to get a large history project ready for one of my jobs. This year is Canada’s 150th birthday and it’s my home town’s 160th birthday. All the dates fall around a few days shy of each other so we’re planning a bunch of stuff for the occasion. I’ve had a good past with my local Historical Society and I used to sit on their board a few years back. Preserving history and educating people about this sort of thing is a passion of mine and in 2012 I wrote an interactive eBook that was featured in a huge exhibit for national Culture Day week.

I am happy I am done this huge project as it took so much time away from all my regular work and from updating my blog. I am thankful I did manage to get a lot of my other projects finished and off my plate before this week started as I don’t think I would have been able to manage if I didn’t.

DANK ZINE

IMG_0929

Issue No 1 of my Dank Zine

I had more copies printed of the first issue of the Dank Zine as a bunch of people started asking me after I placed the order if they could get issues. If you’d like a back issue you can email me. I’m trying to set up a shop area to my blog so I can start selling the Zine quicker and easier to those who are not part of the Patreon. Speaking of new issues….

img_1276

Issue No 2 of my Dank Zine

The second issue is already printed and I’m starting to get each order packaged and shipped to all my backers! I’m now up to 32 colour pages and sticking with the better printing as everyone loved the quality of the first issue. This issue features player interviews with LordBBH, artist and WWF Super fan Anthony Brennan from Qooplo paper toys and all the best Dank Art from the month of April. If you like my work and want to keep me making Dank Art, please back my Patreon!

DANK ART

LordBBH had a decent Monday Roulette stream featuring the random choices made thru the random game picker. A lot more classic games came up this time which is a good thing for me cause I love them. The really dank Noah’s Arc game came up where you had to fetch two of every animal and bring it back onto the arc. I was unaware that there were Bible themed arcade games out there but hey, you hang around long enough during a BBH stream you’re going to learn something about arcade games. My other favourite dank art from BBH’s streams was the Pinball one I made on Thursday for the BBH raffle. At first I was shocked that someone actually requested this game, but soon after drawing the dank art for it I found myself playing pinball on my computer. What can I say? I like pinball :3

Alfred Chicken on Amiga @chuboh

Chuboh was playing some classic Amiga games this week which is always a rare treat as I don’t see many people streaming Amiga stuff. I just started following Chuboh recently as I saw he not only was into arcade games, but DOS and Amiga games as well. When I first started this blog I wanted not only to have a home for all the Dank Art that I make for people’s streams but also to highlight those people who I do art for and have a list of some of the best retro players out streaming today. It can get a bit hard if you’re looking for games and players and don’t know where to start, so in part of making a bunch of Dank Art I’m helping to connect people to players to get them some exposure as well. Speaking about dank old games…

Macaw45 was playing German DOS games and I don’t think anyone is streaming that stuff (unless there is a German guy who’s totally streaming dank DOS stuff from his basement but I have yet to find him). I made a lot of the Doman Dank Art from the chat’s suggestions as I was having a great morning & took suggestions from those participating in chat. I also love drawing ridiculously huge warriors that look awkward and hilarious with their added muscle bulk.

IMG_1107

Elvira has video games? Elvira II the Jaws of Cerberus on Amiga @bouphe

Have you seen Bouphe yet? Bouphe is AWESOME. She’s from the UK and plays old DOS and Amiga games, usually more on the sexier side of things. It’s always great to see girls streaming on twitch but even better when they are playing old dank retro games that no one else is. Bouphe is mega cute and very charming and I caught her last week playing this ridiculous Elvira game for the Amiga. Check her out if you’re not following her already!

In the Studio

I wanted to try out new techniques in the studio this weekend, so I got out my desk easel and experimented with tilting my canvas. It’s necessary to move your space around when you work with it and with watercolour using gravity to help pull the pigment into the water and across the paper. Though I draw every day and I have been painting and selling my work for a while I always try to revisit training techniques as often as I can. Even though I know all this stuff from years of trial and error revisiting lessons and challenging myself to show improvement is the smart way to get better. I would say on any given day I am putting at minimum 3 hours of drawing time in but once a week I will challenge myself and just do “study work” so that I can make mistakes and learn from them.

IMG_1128

Something cool arrived in the mail. This is a Zine by Simon Hanselmann who is well known for his Megg Mog & Owl comics. I follow him on Twitter and he’s one of my favourite cartoonists right now. He’s also really into self printing Zines and I try to collect each one that he comes out with. Each zine is from a limited run and in the case of this one it’s been embellished by Simon himself so I have something unique. I always try to support those who inspire me, so if you haven’t seen his work I recommend you check it out.

GTA Game Expo

my buddy Greg & I took a drive over to Mississauga to check out the GTA Game Expo which was a retro game collectors sell/swap meet I talked about earlier in the year. This was a crazy fun event and I always love going to shows like these as it’s a fun way to find games. Often the titles and things I am looking for that I can’t find or see anywhere else pop up at shows like these, but my biggest problem going now is that it takes me longer to find what I want to buy as I own almost everything :p

I am always looking for imports and cheaper PC Engine stuff and I was happy to say I got in connection with someone local who has a LOT of PC Engine stuff for sale. He was quite impressed that I went for War of the Dead- he tried to sell it to me as “Top down Zelda adventures style game” but I said “omg honey no- thats the worst way to describe this game- it’s an action adventure RPG where you fight as a sexy girl with a shotgun on an island where zombie guts monsters are eating everyone and you save at the church.”

Sure, the prices are not what they used to be, but if you do your leg work and know your stuff then these events are more of a fun thing to do in the afternoon. We sure had fun and I can’t wait for the next show to go to.

The Dankest of Fridays

DANK ART

BBH is trying different streaming things to keep things fresh and fun and on Thursday evening he tried a raffle-style Arcade request event. If you were selected you got to request any arcade game you liked and it was a lot of fun for me as I got to see a bunch of fun games and draw them. The highlight for me was watching BBH play thru Gunsmoke which is one of my favourite arcade games from my childhood though he was unable to credit clear the game (though he did say he had a video up on his youtube doing that). Currently theres one of those 60-in-1 arcade cocktail cabs in my neighbourhood but it’s in the local vape shop. I don’t really vape so I have no business to go in there to sit on their machine all day popping off game after game so I’m stuck playing the NES port I have for the meantime.

I was very happy BBH came back in the week with this style of stream because as much as I love the randomness of a roulette stream it can be so unpredictable that strange odds that nothing great will come up and only strange and questionable games will…

img_0823… You know I’m just going to keep drifting this joke as much as I can. Call me Crazy, but one thing I enjoy is taxiing a joke around because I enjoy seeing their reactions.

Hydlide Special! Macaw spent a whole morning playing thru the PC98 version of Hydlide which is a huge improvement from the crappy NES version most of us got stuck playing. I for one am kind of a huge Hydlide fan as it was a game that one of the kids in my neighbourhood owned and sadly when I was over it was the only game she’d let me play. Serious. That girl had Hydlide and Bart vs The Space Mutants. That’s a quality collection right there.

This version of Hydlide actually has a save file system and a bunch of other things going right for it where the NES port didn’t. I enjoy the game because it’s an example of a very early RPG before the term really game into play and it’s not all that frustrating to play once you know how to play it. The graphics are better in the PC98 version so if you can check out the vod Macaw has up of it now you can see it’s still Hydlide but Hydlide turned up to 11.

Magical Chase @exmortis00

I had a really great time checking out ex_Mortis’s stream this week as he was playing around with a bunch of PC Engine games. He was playing through a fan translation of Energy which is also known as Ashe on the PC98. Energy is a very poor port of Ashe, but for what it is it’s still a fun game to pick up despite a few issues. He hooked me up with the fan translation too which I hope to play thru myself in a few more weeks on Sunday, so make sure you tune in to watch that.
Mortis took a few more PC Engine game recommendations from me and it was overall a fun evening. I stayed up way too late watching & working away at my Dank Zine and made a few new friends in chat.

Leona KOF for @pxlsicle

I have this story about why I do Dank Art. I am a trained artist and I have seen some success selling my work and I am well recognized in my community. However, since 2007 I had to deal with a lot of life challenges when I first started to get sick. I could tell there was something wrong with me, but no matter how many doctor visits and check ups I had they couldn’t determine why I was feeling the way I was. It wasn’t until one day I collapsed at work that I knew something more serious was going on.

I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease which is a common autoimmune disease that effects my thyroid. After seeing a lot of doctors and specialists and reading about what I had, I opted to have mine treated with drug therapy and I have been very healthy since though a lot of stress of dealing with doctors and working with a job and a relationship that wasn’t supportive took a lot out of me. It wasn’t until 2014 that I had enough and had to start making huge changes in my life to not only take control of my disease but to get my life back.

My art has always been there for me when friends couldn’t. I had already made a fun hobby of sketching things along my friends streams and one of the biggest delights I got was hearing them get excited to look at the art I made them. Seeing people enjoying my work was a lot of fun and I started to forget about a lot of bad stuff and just focused on making people happy with my work.

I made this Dank Art for Ian AKA: @pxlsicle because he’s been going thru some sickness and hard times. Often when your down a lot of things can seem terrible and it’s easy to lose sight of where you want to go. The best thing that you can do to get out of this is to focus on what you can do for other people or give what you can, even if what your giving is something tiny. Its a tremendous feeling to see someone enjoy your work which is why I always try to give away as much Dank Art as I can.

Ghosts n Demond @Aqy

Aquas was playing more Ghosts n Demons this week as he’s playing the game in SGDQ and just recently there has been a new patch for the game. I myself am a fan of the Ghouls’ series though I am nowhere near being an expert like Aquas is. Make sure you catch him playing this summer at the event and follow his journey by tuning in when he’s practicing.

C64 Games!! @Macaw45

There were a few more Macaw Dank Arts as Macaw streams like the world is going to explode tomorrow. The best thing about Macaw’s streams is that he can take things you’d normally think would end up in someone’s computer room trash bin and gets excited to play it. He took up this daunting risk of playing C64 emulated games in the week which I was very excited to see having a huge history with that system as a small child. I am unsure if Macaw has ever touched a C64 but one thing I will admit about that system is you better not be going anywhere if you are committing to playing it. Once you get into the game itself it’s not that bad, but the loading of some of those very early games was tremendous. I remember being over a my pal Jason’s place and firing up the C64 and then him saying “HEY WANNA SMOKE CIGARETTES WHILE WE WAIT?” and the onslaught of bad choices that followed while waiting for some stuff to start up. We wrote a lot of bad Star Trek fan fiction waiting for some garbage to load. I still have those printed off the cruddy dot matrix printer he had somewhere. Hell will be had if I ever find and post those somewhere.

Macaw also had a raffle of sorts on his stream one day and he played thru Cadillacs & Dinosaurs as well as DD Crew. I wish I had more time to stream stuff like Macaw does, but then where would I find the time to make all this Dank Art?

A whole weekend to myself, Dank Art and fancy foods

DANK ART

I was hoping to get lots of Dank Art done over the weekend though I think the sudden change in good weather got some people outdoors instead. Saturday morning I tuned into Macaw45 playing a bunch of arcade randoms where he was making 1CC attempts. I was rooting for him to get a 1CC in Cross Blades! as I knew he was practicing on getting an easy boss strategy for the last boss in that game, but the 1CC quickly turned into 2CC’s for Macaw that day. He did get 1CC’s on Punisher 2, but still Cross Blades! was just being a pain. I often think what people did back in the day when arcades were a quarter or even fifty cents and you had to keep feeding money into these games just to figure things out. Most people were not using the internet until 1994 (if my memory is correct, the first time I got onto the internet was 1992 and I was quickly banned from the library’s computers for being a troublemaker) so it’s not like anyone could open a FAQ or guide that would explain this. Arcades wanted your money thats what arcade games do- offer people a challenge. I think thats why I have this respect for people who are into playing arcade games as back when I was a kid there was no manipulations or save-states, you just had to build your own strategy and hope you skills and luck were all in the right place at the right time.

IMG_0773

No biggie 4CC! Trina SNES @Macaw45

I also fell asleep at like 7 pm on Saturday and woke up again at 2am & caught Macaw playing thru all 3 endings for the best one in Trina for the SNES. I basically woke up, drew Dank Art & went back to sleep. I ate & drank far too much on Saturday, but I’ll get into that later on…

IMG_0741

Sonic is the Dankest thing alive! @Aqy

Aquas was streaming Sonic & Knuckles on Saturday which was a huge treat for me for as many of you know I am a huge Sega fan and when I was 10 I was a cute Sonic fangirl. I wanted Sonic everything from birthday cakes, T-shirts and toys. The holly grail for me was to get a Sonic plushie which led me down this crazy path of imports and collecting which is how I got into collecting video games to begin with. When I was in school I would make all these lame Sonic game poster mock-ups in art class and in wood shop I made a sonic pencil holder. I was reading Archie Sonic comics and woke up every day at 5 am to just watch that terrible Sonic cartoon show that was just screaming and mentions of chilly dogs. I even got plans to turn my whole bedroom into the ending scene from Sonic 2 because I loved it so much, but my mom would never let me. Sonic & Knuckles was kind of the last hurrah I had with Sonic games. The whole concept of having to collect ALL the Chaos Emeralds in all 3 games to see a real ending was really daunting for me & I still haven’t done it. But Sonic 3 is where the franchise ended for me in my childhood as soon after I turned 13 a lot of my tastes changed and I didn’t want to play “crazy platforming” games any more and instead wanted to play RPG’s and strange strategy games where the main focus was all on micromanaging everything. I used to have an astounding focus for strategy games when I was 13 and I did more things like joining the chess & GO team at school as well as getting super dirty & nerdy playing Magic The Gathering.

I haven’t played a Sonic game I like after Sonic & Knuckles. But really, for me there doesn’t need to be a part 4 or a part 10 for a franchise thats all about a hedgehog with attitude. Some stories can only be told so many times before they start becoming contrived and predictable. There really wasn’t much of a story line to Sonic games other than Eggman bad, Tails is cute, save the animals, collect the emeralds and save the world! That’s why I think so many strange and out-there things happened with Sonic after his Genesis days because there wasn’t anything to really go to with his story. Video games when I was a kid didn’t require full lore or explaining why, you played the game and were dazzled if it offered you something outside of being entertained. That’s why I started to get more into hardcore nerd strategy junk when I was 13 because those games offered a world outside of the game that was entertaining to me because there was lore and characters who were motivated by emotions and plot devices.

I simply grew up and out of Sonic stuff. I will admit that it wasn’t until 2013 that I actually got a Sonic plushie and I won him at The Ex in Toronto in one of those “Guess your age” booths. The guy who guessed my age was way off so I got to choose any toy I wanted so I went for the modest Sonic toy and laughed because I basically had to grow up to get the one thing I wanted my entire childhood but I got it because I still look like that stupid cheeky kid who would scribble bad Sonic doodles in her math book.

OH WHAT A WEEKEND

IMG_0736

Spring is FINALLY here though it’s still rather chilly out first thing in the mornings. I love getting out in these early sprinkles of good weather to be dazzled by everything around me. I love watching the leaves on trees come out, bugs buzzing around, and of course the return of birds to my neighbourhood. My favourite bird is the Red Wing Blackbird and my indicator that spring has arrived. When the weather warms up I go for walks  looking for them and so far this year I have only been able to hear them. For a while it was really hard finding a lot of the birds on my list that I always go out to find as the area where I live has been under a lot of growth and construction so many of the birds have flown away for safer areas. Some are returning and every year it’s encouraging to see more natural wildlife return to my area as when I was a kid it used to be teaming with life everywhere.

IMG_0805

Here is a shot of my Town Hall which was the town Court House back in the day.

Besides enjoying the better weather I had plans to go out for dinner with my friend Liz and her two daughters at this crazy new Italian place that opened up in my neighbourhood. I like Liz a lot and I really like hanging out with her and her kids as they have this really adorable relationship and constantly make jokes that are really amusing to me. No matter what I’ve been thru, Liz is that friend around town I need to just forget about it and go out and have fun with. Many of my local friends are too tied up with raising their new families or are just terrible at managing their time but Liz has it together and we somehow make our little outings work despite being two incredibly different and busy career women.

Liz doesn’t get things like comic books, video games and that “itch” thing I do “AnnK Art” to, but we find common grounds on our desire and need to write and blog. I first met Liz working freelance at one of the magazines I work for and I was impressed at how motivated she was to make blogging and writing her main thing for many years. She writes every day and that a huge deal to me as it sounds like such a small thing when really it’s possibly the hardest thing to do. I try to blog as much as I can and keep myself writing because I see women like Liz rocking it and having fun every step of the way. You need to surround yourself with motivated people who think differently from you if you want to experience things to the fullest around you and I am grateful for a friend like her because it’s hard to get that connection with others who are doing things rather then people who wait until they are told.

DANK ZINE

IMG_0806The last weekend of the month now means DEADLINE DAYS again and I spent a lot of time working on laying out the second issue to my Dank Zine. I had so many great interviews and Dank Art that I had to up the pages to 34 and still I can’t get everything in it! I should be done soon and sending the issue to the printers, so if you want to get an issue make sure you back my Patreon before April 30th to ensure you get issue number 2. This issue I sit down with Arcade master LordBBH and we get to hear a bit from him about streaming, arcades and growing up as a kid in arcades as well as illustrator Anthony Brennan who is well known in the Toronto scene with his Qooplo paper crafts as well as crashing every con and event dressed up as some crazy WWF wrestler from the early 80’s and 90’s. Also, everyone who backs my Patreon this month will get a FREE SURPRISE in each issue which you can “build” yourself.

Issue number 1 was SUCH A HUGE HIT I’ve had to go in and order more copies because some people missed out on the first wave and I forgot to get my parents a copy. If you still need issue number one, email me (agento@hotmail.com) and I’ll work out something to get you an issue! In the meantime, you should back my Patreon so you don’t miss an issue and also get access to my discord chat where you can download all my Dank Art at high rez as well as vote on articles and art for inclusion in the Zine.

I’m also going to try out a new idea that I had with commissions as I am getting A LOT of them lately and to help me stay focused I would want to try that all my commissions will be purchased thru my Patreon and be featured in the Zine itself. You don’t need to back every month which I think is the thing that scares off people from things like Patreon. If you just want the commission you can still get that, only I’d rather have everything to go towards printing my Dank Zine as thats what I want. This is a very fun project for me and it’s great to be doing it again and I am happy that I have something productive to do with my Dank Art.

Get your issue already! What are you waiting for? If you like my Dank Art keep me doing it! This artist thanks you :3
