Return of the Fish

I’ve been shaking a fishing rod at my Dreamcast for three years now with the goal of 1CCing the arcade mode and having a lot of fun in the process. Going for a Wolrd Record never even seemed like an afterthought because I just really like playing the game. If you’ve caught any of my streams where I’m fishing I’m usually just cracking jokes, yelling at polygon sharks and screaming “ITS HUUUUUUUUGE” when I get the big fish. I decided to look up the World Record and was stunned to discover that my time was around a good minute and a half faster than the current ranking time.

The thing about World Records is as soon as you go for one there’s going to be several other people who are going to try and crush it. I held the record for a good day before someone else took it away from me. I knew though that I could get a better time if I just focused more on the game instead of joking around and goofing off. Sure enough, my current time is now 5:29 and in the lead. One of the best things to come from all of this was clicking into IcKY’s stream when he was doing runs and finally meeting someone else who was playing this game. One of the best things about playing games in this community is making friends along the way and I am hopeful other people are hungry enough to want to go for the World Record themselves.

Also props to Dasyati for making this amazing Dank Sega Marine Fishing Art for me! Dasyati does Dank Art for the zine as well and if you want to submit your work, please email me your stuff to agento@hotmail.com  and it might get in!

Dank Zine Update

Photo 2019-07-17, 10 18 56 PM.jpg

You’ll be noticing a change to the format going forward with the Zine as the company I was printing with before closed and I had to find someone else local to help with production. To help cut down on costs its worth for me looking for a company that is as local as possible as shipping a box of Zines from another country costs way more then me having to go pick it up. Hopefully, things should be a bit smoother with this new company.

Poochy_Fam

This months sticker was ultra-cute featuring the Poochy and his pupper crew. I have stacks of stickers still available so I will be including more stickers in the next instalment of orders. If you want a sticker, pick one up in the Dank Shop soon before they are gone.

Dank Art

As always, I’m up to making lots of Dank Art to numerous streams for your enjoyment. If you back the zine at the right levels you get a chance to grab one of my originals or even commission me to make some personalized Dank Art. Check out this amazing piece I made for Volwrath that he recently got framed. I love it when my work is framed :3

New Dank T-Shirt in the Dank Shop

mockup-7a77ec1b (1)

Get the new Dank Zine T-Shirt and wear it when you watch Dank Streams- or at work… if your work is easy going like that. You can grab the new shirt up at the Dank Shop here. All funds collected from the Dank Shirt go right back into making the Zine more wacky and fun (and possibly my UberEats spending).

Bunches of Games Done Eventualy

After a few months of intense deadlines, new things in life and big changes, I am back with my weekly blog! A LOT of stuff has been going on in my life but I have made time to stay on top of all my Dank Art and Dank Zines. The blog however had been put on hold but now that things seem to be not as busy I am back at it with the Dankness every week! Let’s get caught up on all the stuff you missed:

SO MANY ZINES

E96F605F-0FE1-437B-898D-DD20673C6339
Puri-Puri with his issue of Dank Zine #15

Have you been checking out my Dank Shop lately? I now have issues of Dank Zine for sale there so if you have missed an issue or only wanted to grab the issue of your favourite streamer. Remember issues are always cheaper when you subscribe.

The most current issue up for grabs right now is Issue 16 with an interview with Giby who is known in the fighting scene circles as well as his goonish appearance with the GameGoons who stream on Twitch. I got to sit down with him and talk about his fights in and out of competitions.

We also celebrate 10 years of Fangamer in issue 16 of Dank Zine with an interview with co-founder Reid Young where he reflects on his little game merchandise company that could. We touched down on how 10 years ago, Fangamer was operating out of Reid’s second bedroom in his apartment and how it’s grown to the size it is now. Sadly I wont be at Camp Fangamer taking place on July 20th, but it’s at that event where Fangamer will celebrate it’s official 10 year’s with the people who helped make it great, the fans.

98A31C03-B0D7-4248-9516-A4D7C37FB98B

I also want to welcome cartoonist and illustrator Shan Murphy to the team as she now will be featured monthly in Dank Zine with a series of comics that looks at the personal experience of playing video games. You can check out her work here to see more of her work. As the months go by and the Zine grows I hope to keep adding more content from quality content makers like Shan to the mix.

SO MUCH DANK ART

The pile of Dank Art that needs to be uploaded is too big! When I started to get busy, I started off with the intentions to put all the Dank Art in folders from the week so that when I got unbusy I could simply drop them all in. Yeah, that didn’t happen and now I am sitting a huge dank pile. I should be uploading more as the weeks go on, so do keep checking back to get more Dank Art.

SGDQ 2018

Over $2 Million dollars was raised in just one week during Summer Games Done Quick and I had the pleasure again to be there as it happened. I flew out solo but met up with a bunch of people at the event so I never really felt alone when I was there. It was great to see all of my awesome friends again and hang out with them even if it was all the way in Minneapolis.

I had the honour of sitting on the couch for both Aquas’ Mr Gimmick run with fellow speed runner Narshe along with his daughter as well as LRock’s Double Dragon run on the NES. You can check out both the vod’s here:

The BEST thing about going to a GDQ is to meet other speed runners and streamers and hang out with old friends as well as meeting new. I think I firmed up the next 5 issues of my Dank Zine in just three days of talking to people. Oh shucks, I was also super happy when I introduced myself people said “Oh yes! I know you and your Zine! I would love to be part of that!” I also had the pleasure of meeting Puwexil who I have been following for a while on twitter and ask him some questions about his Final Fantasy 6 speedrun as I am a huge fan of FF6 and his stream was going to be my highlight of the week. Make sure you sub to my Patreon or keep watching my Dank Shop and pre-order or back the zine if you want to read about that one as Puwexil really dove back into some GDQ history from its humble beginnings in some guys basement to the 4H club.

Get your Pulls in… Collecting in 2018

img_5291

Everyone I know has a collection. My father has been collecting classical music for fifty years and has one wild museum (when it’s that big it’s a museum). It’s floor to ceiling stacked with his favourite composers, the albums that had the better art, the obscure and rare recordings. The only thing that was on par with my fathers’ music collection was my mother’s book collection. Together, they married into a movie collection, and that was normal and was “every day” feeling for me. I naturally started collecting comics and video games at a young age and learned you had to shop around to five or six different stores in a day just to find all your stuff.

My good buddy Greg and I meet up once a month to go collecting and drive out to a few locations or any shows that might be happening. Greg usually has a better idea of what he’s looking for where I often take my chances as I know I can be very fickle. This time we were going to Gotham Central which connects with a collection flea markets, comic shops and even this place called Game Experts which I like to check out for games.

First a bit on Gotham Central which is pretty much how I want all comic stores to look like when I walk into them. It’s wall to floor selection, tonnes of huge collectable action figures, toys, games, and even a huge candy shop where you can get sugar breakfast cereal or a 3-pound gummi bear. I often get so overwhelmed with this place that I forget I am there to get comics, but they have an amazing selection, and they often carry the trades I am looking for as they usually have those in inventory. Greg told me the candy store wasn’t open the last time we were there, so I took my time walking those isles slowly to kind of drink up everything,

I only grabbed a few photos from inside, and I am regretting not getting more photos of some of the candy there. As you can see, everything is very neatly stacked so you can find it and they have a  range of unique merch.

I have never seen this game in the wild ever. I have only seen videos of it and had an idea that it was going to fetch a high price. I knew enough that it was “That game that’s a lot like Valis” and it stands out as having a wacky sense of humour so of course, I wanted it. I always try to find that something that is a little different when looking for games and this cart was stuck all the way at the back of the jewel case.

img_5449Like most people I know who collect you kind of “hmmm” & “hawwww” over things especially prices. There are a few games that I keep bumping into where I see the price tag hanging around $40 which often makes me pass. I think Alex Kidd for the Genesis is one of those cases where I saw this game hovering around $40 for a while but always chose to pass on it. I’m glad I did as I picked it up for $20 which is not bad.

img_5450Finding imports is somewhat rare around here these days, but I always manage to find a few dirty Famicom carts, and they are usually decently priced to move. I passed up on a few items, but I never try to go over a budget when I am out shopping these days as I don’t have the cash flow for it.

We decided to check out the flea market that was inside this connection of buildings and Greg must have warned me a million times over that we might not find what we are looking for here. Usually, you can find one or two vendors set up in a flea market who are selling games or comics. We found a few who had some alright stuff but nothing that stood out enough to buy. I did find a laser disk seller in that mole-cricket maze, but I am unsure if I am ready to make the plunge into collecting laser disks.

Some people can’t do a real flea market like this. Seriously you miss out not checking these places now and then for deals. I used to go to sites like these all the time in my teens with my family, so I’m never intimidated to check out the bargain bins.

Easter with the Family.

img_5267I saw my parents last weekend for Easter lunch. My mom recently learned how to work a DVD player, so that means my parents are focused on collecting DVDs and are starting to trickle down some of their VHS collection. You will not find a more eclectic collection of movies than on the shelves of my parents. They range from the best of the best and the best of the worst and even a few titles that will make you wonder if my parents were hippies. Shocking reveal: my parents are not hippies and are in fact Star Trek fans.

Dank Art

I have been so busy with Zine work that I don’t have as many Danks to share this time around. With the new issue already at the printers and feeling a bit worn down and sick I really just need a few days off to get things sorted out. I was hoping I could have done that during Easter break, but instead I got sick and now I need a break from my break.

Facebook Page Launch

After almost an entire two years of making Dank Art, I have finally caved in and made a Facebook page. If you want Dank Stuff on your Facebook feed then follow this link and hit that like button. The Facebook page will act as sort of a permanent home for a lot of the stuff I share as well as another outlet for people to find me.

I am currently working on the next few isues, so if you would like to submit work or have a great idea, give me a should over social or email me here at dankzines@gmail.com

Lousy Smarch Weather

Dank Art

It’s been a while since I updated! Here is a huge Dank Art Dump for you to enjoy. I’ve been a bit under the weather with a slight lung infection (gotta love winter) but still trying to do my best to ensure my work and deadlines are met. That just means extra stuff like my blog & social life suffer. I’ll be back 100% soon though with more updates & more Dank Art.

Chuboh in Dank Zine

Our favourite dungeon crawler Chuboh is our feature streamer of the month for the March Issue of my Dank Zine! If you are not already backing my Patreon you’ll have to wait for this issue to hit my Dank Shop. All backers will be getting a bunch of special Chuboh style stickers in with their zine featuring his sub emotes.

Mr Gimmick!

Hats off to my pal Eyes5 who I interviewed in a past issue of my Dank Zine for making such awesome and adorable plushes! This guy here is Mr Gimmick from that incredible NES game. If you follow Aquas then you know he’s got one as well as should anyone who’s a huge fan of the game. Mr Gimmick is very rare and only pops up in Eyes’ Etsy shop once in a while so the next time he make an appearance I’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, check out her store and see what she has currently.

Fixing the Blinking Light

My NES came to an untimely death a few weeks ago live on stream in a very frightening manner. In fact, that NES was a cheaper Retron that I was using because I couldn’t get my original NES to work without wiggling the cart all around.

As a child I never really had to blow into carts as I had a Master System (both a Master System 1 and 2) and often if the game wasn’t inserted properly I’d know because a Snail game would come up on my Master System 1 and Alex Kidd would play on my 2. It always seemed a bit odd to me that NES’s didn’t have a built in game like this. The other thing I liked about the Master System is that it was top-loading so I was usually sure I’d always be getting the game inserted the right way.

Over the years it has been proven that the North American “VHS” style NES has several design flaws and the biggest one was the whole “Pressing the game down” to play. These guys came up with an awesome solution to upgrade your old system to bypass this issue and get a clean connection every time you insert a game with what they call The Blinking Light Win. I was seriously on the fence with the fix at first as I figured buying another Retron would be an easier fix, but my boss talked me into it and I ordered one.

Here’s what the old pins looked like! Gross!!

It did take a bit as I do believe these guys are a humble and small operation but everything came packaged up nicely all wrapped in plastic with the most easiest instructions ever. They were even nice to include a few stickers as well. I got everything set up on the work bench at work ready to install it and before I could I got busy with a few customers. When I came back 10 minutes later my boss was screwing my NES back together with a laugh saying “That was easy!” Thank you, Tyler! You can’t leave a broken anything around that man when he’s in work mode and even though I was excited to do it myself he did it quicker plus he cleaned the layer of dust off my NES just because.

Dig out your old NES and get this fix! For the same price that it costs to get a Retron you could be fixing your old NES and get better results. You will not be disappointed and I cannot stress how happy I am with this amazing fix. The pins are a bit tight as new pins tend to be, but my last Retron was atrocious with how tight those pins were. Make sure you clean your games and keep your stuff dust free to ensure a long life of classic retro gaming in your place.

Dank Art

On American Thanksgiving, LordBBH decided he was going to leap headfirst into playing Willow for NES which happens to be one of my fave RPG’s for the system as well as one game on my “to finish” list. Though I am not the biggest fan of Willow the movie (I was far too young to really appreciate the movie as a kid) I am a huge fan of the game and made amusing Dank Art along BBH’s frustrations and trials with the game. BBH got halfway thru before realizing it was going to take much longer to get thru it, so he shut it off and gave everyone the THANK they were waiting for and played a 1CC Credit of Willow for Arcade.

Macaw45 is going thru his collection of DOS Shareware games which range from palaces from Russia, Spain, Italy and Japan. For those who don’t know, back in the days of DOS people would dial into BBS’s and download shareware to “try it” before buying it or stores would have compilation disks of these programs to help sell more parts of the game. This was one way new or indie game devs would get their games out into the market and hopefully be their big break into the world of game development. You gotta think that there’s probably hundreds of thousands of games that are like this just floating around in some archival space on the internet and it’s part of Macaw’s ongoing project to discover and preserve the best of these games. Often these games seem too simple or even silly when you first start them up but often if you play them a little bit longer there’s something that sticks out about them that’s attractive or interesting. That’s a typical Macaw stream these days so check out some of the real ripe stuff he’s been unearthing from the dankest depths of the shareware market.

Next month it’s going to be all about PJ in my Dank Zine so I have been going by his Dragon View & FF9 streams to see what he’s been up to. For me, its the Final Fantsy 9 playthru he’s doing right now because when that game came out I didn’t give it the attention or credit it needed. I think everyone has an opinion about which Final Fantasy is the best and which are not, but I think this Final Fantasy was a true gem and the last of its kind. It’s charming and it has all the signature fantasy elements that made the series what it is from black mages to airships to special abilities like “EAT” it’s there. Often you don’t know how good you got it till its years later and someone shows you what you’ve been missing out on and I feel like I missed out hard with Final Fantasy 9.

PJ Stickers are in!

2AF477F4-2473-42E8-99C5-D92460856819.jpeg

Hot off the presses are all the backer reward stickers featuring PJ’s sub emotes! Make sure you are subscribed to the Dank Zine before November 30th to get yourself a copy of the Zine featuring his interview as well as a free set of these stickers. Also, backers will get a special bonus sticker for just being awesome and backing my Patreon. Thank you always gu

I also have a sneak peek of what next month’s cover will look like! This months cover is done my Anthony Brennan who was actually featured in the first ever Dank Zine for his papercrafts and his passion for dressing up as Pro Wrestlers at conventions. Anthony is also a skilled illustrator and has had his work featured almost everywhere. I asked him to draw up something nice that reflected who PJ was without it catching on fire or glitching out. Thank you, Anthony!

New changes in November

Dank Art

I made a LOT of Dank Art on the weekend watching the 1CC Marathon. I missed a lot of Friday because I was working, but I did my best to try to catch most of it between IRL stuff and eating. It was a lot of fun and I always love watching skilled players do their thing in events such as this. I hope more fun events like this pop up on twitch that will help to encourage more people to go for their gaming goals, meet new friends and find new streamers to follow. Most of friends on twitch I met thru the 1CC Marathon, so don’t be shy when it comes to signing yourself up for events like these.

I caught some of Ultimoice’s Final Fantasy 7 runs over the weekend as well as more Mother 2 runs in between of the 1CC Marathon as I was cooped up around the house most of the time. A lot of people are going to say that FF7 was the game that changed everything back in the day and they are right. I remember seeing the commercials for Final Fantasy 7 on the TV and freaking out that it was being called Final Fantasy 7 and not FF4 AND it was coming out for the PlayStation and not the N64 as what was expected. The biggest thing was when suddenly EVERYONE wanted to play Final Fantsy 7 and almost overnight people who were never into video games suddenly wanted to be. I’m not joking, everyone was so blown away at the graphics and the sheer size and complexity of this game that you had everyone dropping serious coin on PS1’s to just play this game (minus the nerds who bought the PC release of the game and who had to suffer thru playing that hahaha).
Though Final Fantasy 7 isn’t my favourite game (it’s not even my favourite Final Fantasy)  it does hold a special place in my heart just because of that experience and what direction video games started to go after it came out. The fact that Ulti speedruns this game is absolute insanity to me, but he pulls it off and it is a run you have to catch at least once if you have played the game. FYI the first time I saw him run though the game was at the last SGDQ and I stayed up to catch most of it.

Dank Zine

60EF2D97-E932-4721-99C4-2C05DF6CBE43Backers for my Dank Zine who back before the end of the month will be getting this amazing limited print run sticker featuring Milky from Shock Troopers! This design was created last Christmas during one of BBH’s streams when Twitch had a bunch of cute holiday emoticons that you could play with. I made a Dank Art from it and decided to clean it up this year to give it make it my gift to my backers.

Make sure you back my Dank Zine before November 30th as this month’s feature streamer is none other than PJ. I got a chance to chat with PJ just over Halloween about his experience speedrunning, streaming and Gin! I also have a special interview with Cathodedaze who works at a special Arcade Museum in Florida where they have over 50 arcade and pinball machines and what its like to have a cool dream job. Fantastic Planet returns with a great Christmas feature as well as a bunch of cool art and extras for the holidays. The other neat thing is this issue will have featured PJ Sub Stickers so if you’ve been following PJ and want these stickers then you better back before the 30th of the month together yours. 8AF1A8A2-3493-4A90-B6E5-D4821B8BE5E4.jpeg

The BIG BIG BIG news for me is that my little zine has grown so much in the last few months that to meet the demands of my printing fulfilment I will be changing printers. Subscribers should instantly notice a HUGE upgrade to the quality and look of the Zine as now I am big enough to move away from print-on-demand orders. This means a lot more control on my part when it comes to the look and feel of each issue so I am very excited to be moving up with these new changes.

This means a huge change for Dank Zine because each issue now will be limited to the one production run and once all back issues are sold THAT’S IT. This means if you are backing my Zine you will get an issue with all the fun stickers each month and there will only be a few back issues in the store for those who were sitting on the fence. Even more reason to back the Zine so you never miss out. This also means starting in January my current Dank Shop will come down to make way for the new shop, so if you were thinking of grabbing any back issues that are in my Dank Shop right now do it soon before they are gone forever!

Falling out of Autumn and into November

Dank Art

I missed LordBBH’s Cuphead stream but mostly because I’m trying not to spoil too much of that game for myself as I do want to play thru it on my own time. Part of my frustration with gaming is that I am on a Mac because of the amount of photo and video editing that I do. The work around is I could always install parallel and go about playing a lot of the newer games that way but in the meantime I’m stuck using the set up I have and waiting for stuff to come out on my system or for a console. In the meantime, I made a bunch of fun Dank’s for BBH’s Monday Roulette stream as usual. LordBBH is taking part in the 1CC Marathon (as well as almost everyone I have featured here) which is happening on Nov 10, 11, and 12th this month. Check out the schedule here.

Chuboh got sick this weekend yet with a little encouragement he took some flu medication and made good on the occasion and did a quick Halloween stream on the 31st complete in his Bongo costume. He had been talking about doing a costume stream for a while in other people’s stream and when I get wind that someone is boasting a costume stream I try to do my best to make sure they live up to it. BTW- here is his Bongo costume. You can see it’s a perfect likeness (minus the beard).

Macaw is king when it comes to finding truly strange games to play. He was streaming a bunch of obscure games for a British computer called the Acorn Archimedes that was popular in the 80’s and 90’s. I have never even heard of this computer but that’s not too surprising as this was primarily a UK computer and a lot of the games for the system are almost forgotten. Somehow he’s managed to find a few of these games by scouring the internet and played a few which was amazing for those who haven’t seen these games in years and for those who’ve never seen this kind of stuff. There have also been some Amiga hijinks through the week though crazy Australia times are conflicting with my regular sleeping habits.

Monster Bash having a mid-life crisis @capnclever

Let’s take a second to talk about CapnClever, possibly one of the better known DOS/PC Retro streamers on Twitch. You might have already seen some of his speed runs at any given GDQ and he’s one of the first people I think of when I think about who’s streaming DOS stuff on Twitch. When I was a kid, I used to walk all the way to the other side of town to just hang out with my one friend Jason to play DOS games in his basement. Lucky for me he moved closer to me and soon I was meeting up with him each morning before school at the crack of dawn to play games. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for old PC games so that’s why you’ll always see me paying my respects to those who stream them! Speaking about old stuff on new things….

SNES MINI

I actually got my hands on the elusive SNES MINI system! It’s really tiny and came pre-loaded with Earthbound on it already so you know I’ve already started to play a game. I wont be streaming this bad boy, but I do intend to enjoy it and take it with me on vacations and adventures if I happen to take a few days off work. The best thing is that now I can put my WiiU away in the closet and just use this tiny machine to play Earthbound since that was the only reason I bought the WiiU in the first place.

Don’t get me wrong, I had intentions to buy other games on the WiiU but I bought Mario Kart and that was about it. Nothing else on that system really appealed to me and I really just wanted to play Earthbound on an HD system. The best thing though about WiiU Earthbound is you can do the Shattered Man glitch trick and IT WORKS! Maybe what I should do is look into capturing that trick to make a How-To video or see if I can do it on my SNES Mini.

I also managed to get a copy of Fantastic Pinball for my Sega Saturn! I have been streaming the PS1 version of the game however I wanted to own a copy and since I have a JP Saturn I decided to buy this copy and see what, if any, differences there might be. I noticed a few minor differences and I feel the ball moves a lot faster in the Saturn version but other than that it’s the same game! If I had to choose which version to get go with the Saturn version as I feel that is the vastly superior one out of the two as I feel the ball moves slower in the PS1 version and I’d rather a faster ball to a light-slow ball.

2BE8D970-B5F1-4E7D-BC38-61D7428AA239.jpeg

Also, are you backing my Dank Zine yet? Right now if you are backing you are going to get stickers that feature the sub icons from the feature streamer of the month! I just LOVE giving stuff away and this is another great idea that keeps giving back to the streamers themselves. Make sure you are backing the Zine because you can’t get stickers if you order from the Dank Shop.
