Updates & AGDQ Fun

I am at AGDQ this week to help support Aquas and all my other friends as they raise money for Cancer Prevention! Stay tuned for a HUGE post about what I have been up to at the event and also what I have planed for my Dank Zine in 2018. I have been very busy here on my trip to America and one of the best part of this event is finally meeting friend from streams & chats face to face. Stay tuned for a HUGE AGDQ Dank Art dump and few other surprises :3

That first week in November

Dank Art

Ultimoice went back to playing regular EarthBound again but he was playing for a World Record in PJ% which has a different set of requirements then a regular Speedrun of EarthBound. You can catch video of Ultimoice here making that World Record. Keep checking back to my blog as I am working on an interview with Ultimoice for an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine!

LordBBH had a weekend featuring his “Viewers Choice Extravaganza” where followers can sign up their favourite game to be entered into a random raffle draw to be played. I always love BBH’s extravaganza as the likelihood that a really good game coming up is way higher than the randomness you’ll get with a regular Monday Roulette. Also, BBH is getting a lot of fantastic Dank Art made by not just me but by MakotoTruth and Dasyati to name a few. Check them out on Twitter & follow them as they make great Dank Art as well!

Macaw45 wasn’t around much on the weekend, however he is the feature streamer for the November issue of my Dank Zine. I did an interview with him were we talked about his obsession for the more rare and obscure games out there and what sort of games he’s into if you were to stumble into his stream. I had a two-hour Zine packaging giveaway stream where I was giving out free stickers that feature Macaw’s sub icons and I was happy to discover that a lot of his fans are from all over the world. So that means someone in Sweden is going to get a bunch of GUTS stickers from his stream & possibly put them all over their car & it will be the GUTS MACHINE or something like that. Please send me any and all photos of your Dank Stickers on things once you get them! Please be careful when sticking them on people or pets! (Please, don’t put them on your pets).

Nothing I love more than this smug AF Carpet Dank Art I did for Aquas recently. It’s like you’re throwing a hug party for the first time at your parents place and you’re not sure if you’re dressed right or if the right people will show up or that person you like will be there. Meanwhile, good buddy Carpet is all classed up with her turban and magic carpet dapper as hell  leaning back all cool saying “Hey, don’t worry about it, duuuuuuuude,” cause really, you going to be alright.

PRINTS PRINTS PRINTS

EF43FC47-C7C5-4E53-B599-DAE780ADBF47.jpegNew Print! Phantasy Bar 2 is now available for sale on Red Bubble. Right now I am using them for quick sales of my larger pieces that I am working on. If you want to get a copy of this print, make sure you click on the image and check out thru Red Bubble.

DANK ZINE

My eight issue of my Dank Zine has been shipped to all my Patreon backers! They should expect these gems to arrive in their mailbox over the next few days. This months issue is my biggest yet with 50 pages! The cover is done by Sarah Joncas who is not only one of my best friends, but she’s also an AMAZING artist. I also have interviews with Macaw45, Fantastic Planet on when he was banned from Twitch, and a few players who will be participating in this weekend’s 1CC Marathon starting on Friday. As always there is a lot of crazy Dank Art plus backer stickers for those who have been supporting me over the Patreon.

Like always, if you want to back my Zine please check out my Patreon page. If you just want to sub for one issue you totally can, if you want custom Dank Art with your Zine you can, if you just like the project and want to donate $5 to help get someone some freebies in the mail you can do that too! I love giving away things as much as I can with this Zine and it really comes down to everyone’s love of the games and supporting those who play them.

Issue Seven featuring the SHMUP crew at STGWeekly, trap15 and an article written by Icarus about Battle Garegga is now available for sale in my Dank Shop now that the new issue is out. I always stress that you save more money backing the Patreon as that includes your shipping plus you’re going to get freebies and stickers if I am packing the envelopes. With my Dank Shop I don’t have as much control yet on packaging those orders as they are made to order and you’ll be paying for shipping on top of the Zine itself. Still, it’s the best way that I can get my Zines out for the time being.

As you might know I have passed 60 subscribers for my Dank Zine. I am literally 20 subs away from my goal of 80 where I can start shopping the Zine out to other printers. Saying that, my Dank Shop might be changing, so if you were thinking of ordering back issues try to do it soon as I might not be able to re-print a short run of old issues with my new printers.

Coming up for Christmas I have interviews with Owlnonomous with his Owlcade, his passion for collecting pinball and arcade machines as well as a behind the scenes look at a real arcade museum and what it’s like to be working the dream job: Retro Arcade Manager. I also have a very special BBH Christmas sticker as a special gift to all my backers for that issue. Also, I sat down with PJ recently to discuss his interview in my January issue. I have my hands full for the next few weeks so keep visiting my blog to get updates as they happen.

Also, if you want to contribute your own Dank Art or want to write something for my Dank Zine I am looking for submissions! Please email me to inquire.

Closing out a Month

Making Dank is what I am all about these days and I am happy to announce that I am accepting submissions for creative content! If you want to join the fam and think you have what it takes to have your work featured in my Dank Zine you may submit it here at dankzine@agentannk.com

I am looking for content that is about retro gaming, streams, and the gaming collecting community. It’s not just limited to writers, I am looking for artists as well who want to make Dank Art and be featured in the Zine or on my blog. Please end me an email and attach an example of your work to get the ball rolling.

Dank Art

BBH had a great week returning with his championship belt from the tournament he just won, as well as visiting the Portland Retro Gaming Expo over the weekend. I’m sure he’s going to talk about all the cool stuff there including this strange and new Space Harrier type game he got to try out at the expo. If only my budget would allow me more chances for travel so I could check out events like that then I’d be there myself front and centre. Hopefully BBH got some photos and will show them off during the Monday roulette stream.

Macaw45 had an emergency unboxing video as he got a bunch of new auction wins arrive at his place and whenever he gets a cool delivery such as this he’s gotta share it with his community. There was a bunch of Japanese Windows 95 games as well as few other neat things that he got to show off. The Dracula Sega CD game was a surprise being that I never thought Macaw would subject himself to the torture witch is Dracula on Sega CD, but he did manage to play the game right up to the boss where thru means of the emulation or the game itself it kept glitching out. This sums up Dracula for Sega CD as a whole.

There was a whole week where Macaw was exploring FMV Sega CD games, so hopefully he will someday replay those or explore more of the Sega CD library on a future bird stream.

Gracious IV @Aqy

Aquas is getting ready for GDQ by punishing himself with his practice streams of Contra III along with Batrider for the 1CC Marathon taking place in November. You can check out the trailer here. The 1CC Marathon is a fun weekend where streamers in the arcade scene can get together and go for those 1 Credit Clears and beat the game on one “quarter”. I took part in the event last year with Sega Marine Fishing where I managed to not just 1CC the game, but did it under 15 minutes. I’m sure someone’s done it faster. Anyway, get over to Aqy’s channel and if you are a sub or a fan so try to donate money to his GDQ fund so he can fly out this January and take part in the event.

Ultimoice is making more progress in Speedrunning Mother 2 and after a bunch of resets I got to see him complete a decent run this past Sunday. I am not 100% sure if that was his PB for Mother 2 as it was very early in the morning (what am I doing awake this early in the morning?), but I will say congratulations to Ultimoice as he does put on an impressive run of the game. If you love Earthbound half as much as I do then you definitely want to follow him as he’s going to be going for the World Record in Mother 2 soon. Ultimoice was quick to pick up that I will try my hardest to make Dank Art that is relevant to what’s going on in the current game, so this weeks collections is a whole bunch of stuff that seems to slow him down in those awkward Mother 2 situations.

Goati managed to scrub-save the final boss in Fantastic Pinball last week so its official on what conditions need to happen in order to open the boss room. The boss itself has several stages of awesomeness as Goati showed off here in this clip. I’m still playing the entire game as I am a HUGE pinball fan, however I have moved onto a new game to feature on my weekends and that is Sonic Spinball

FE16457B-7CC4-4791-9010-644BBB881C1A.png

Sonic Spinball came out in between of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 to fill a void that the Casino Zone left you with after you defeated the boss. It’s interesting mechanic is that you have to manipulate Sonic as he’s spinning as a little pinball to hit the targets and collect the chaos emeralds while you go after Dr Robitnik. It also features characters from the Saturday morning Sonic Cartoon, not to be confused with the Sonic cartoon where his siblings form a rock band or the horrible The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

I was the biggest Sonic fan as a little girl and naturally I had all the Archie comics, books, guides and anything else I could get my hands on. When I found out that they were making a cartoon featuring Sonic I was excited and couldn’t stop talking about it. I always thought that the Saturday morning cartoon was the only Sonic show on TV until I started to have medical problems. I had to start waking up at 5am in the morning to take medication hours before eating which made me scan the TV Guide looking for something to watch at 5am and low and behold The Adventures of Sonic their Hedgehog was there!

If you are wondering why someone would put this Sonic Show on at 5am in the morning it’s because that’s the only time slot that would ensure no one would be able to watch it. It’s that bad. The animation is OK from time to time but the world could have been a better place without this incarnation of Sonic. I think this is also where the stupid Chilli Dog obsession came from. Oh well, if you like Sonic then tune in on Sundays when I am going to play thru Sonic Spinball and share with you not only my love of Pinball but Sonic as well.

Fall

Greg & I checked out Mill Pond in our town this past Sunday to take in the colours of the season. It was 30 degrees outside! I have photos of us walking the pond from last year in our full winter coats. If you live somewhere that doesn’t have such a glorious splendour of colours in fall please enjoy the few that I have posted here!

Sweet Home

Dank Art

Still working on getting that backlog of work uploaded. I’m almost caught up with the time that I have lost, but I will eventually get there. Enjoy!

More great LordBBH stuff here from Monday roulette and Thursday raffles. LordBBH will be one of many players that will be in the 1CC Marathon which we both took part in last year. An official players schedule should be going up halfway thru October so stay tuned to see who made the cut. In the meantime, shoutouts to Mokototruth, Dasyati  and leilei for their own contributions to art during BBH’s streams. I’ll see if I can talk to them and get permission to post up their pieces of Dank Art along mine here so it all gets to be shown off in one place if people go looking for it. Also, omg Dank Art is a thing now!

Macaw45 is streaming almost every day now so when I wake up and get into my first job of the day I start it off watching whatever strange oddities he’s got cooked up for my morning. There was almost of week of Lord of the Sword where he dived into the strange Zelda II looking action RPG game for the Sega Master System. It took him a few days, but he eventually became the Lord of the Sword himself when he finished it. There was also some muddling around with the endless glut of licensed Gameboy Advance titles and other strangeness.

Chuboh is the Lord of Jank and has started to not only look at Janky arcade games, but is also focusing on some of the more special titles featured on the Amiga: the forgotten computer system of the 90’s. In one of these streams he played The Amazing Spider-Man which some people will remember for that insane looking health bar which is just Spider Man’s skeleton. That Dank Art has gotten well over 100 likes since I posted it last Thursday and is my official top rated Dank Art ever so far. Who would have thought that boner Spider-Man was such a huge deal?

Also Zallard1 is starting to route thru Starfox 2 for Speedruns on his channel. Check out what he’s got going on for this never before released classic from the SNES. There has been some amusing articles floating around about Starfox 2 and depending on which ones you read you’ll find very polarizing points of view that either say the game is a bunch of trash compared to modern games to a product of its time that pushed new concepts of gaming for the SNES. Just remember that this was a game that was made for the 90’s when gaming was in a completely different universe compare to where we are now. Also, the mystery behind why this game never game out has been answered by a few diligent fact finders so go watch the video and stop guessing as to why this game never saw an official release as it might disappoint you …

I’ve started following Ultimoice as he has started routing Mother 2 for Super Famicom recently and for those who know me I cannot get enough Earthbound. I found out first about ___ like many this year who saw him perform at SGDQ when he wrapped up the event speedrunning Earthbound for the first time ever at a Games Done Quick. If you love the Mother games as much as I do then go check out his stuff and give him a follow as he’s friendly, entertaining and really has his head wrapped around these games.

Sweet Home

E65CBCDF-DD26-4382-ACCF-4DE9786D0D61

I have wanted to stream Sweet Home since 2011 when I first discovered it from a few online articles that were passed along to me. Everyone will tell you that this is the game that inspired the Resident Evil games and that it was a tie-in with a movie with the same name that came out at the same time. This game never saw a North American release for reasons that are quite obvious such as the gore, violence and graphic death scenes.

That’s right, death scenes. And when your characters die they die for the rest of the game. There are no places to sleep off the pain to restore your health, no secret water that heals all wounds and defiantly no phoenix downs. Just like in real Life, Death is permanent.

56FC2D8E-9F32-4C3E-AB29-41D8F740023D.png

I called it a dick. WELL DON’T BUILD YOUR MONUMENT LOOKING LIKE A BIG DICK!

The other challenging thing about this game is the item management where each character has a special tool ability that only they can use. If that character dies you are stuck looking for alternatives that are littered around the dirty haunted mansion. Also if you find yourself in a situation where you need to pick up something but your inventory is full you’ll have to drop something. Sounds a little like Earthbound in that aspect of gameplay only it’s more serious and stressful in Sweet Home.

Troll 2 OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

Also, this game is creepy as hell. The music is every eery and some of my followers has described it as “Jaws” sounding where it gives you this feeling you are being hunted or something terrible is following you. Even the pause button stressed you out when you use it as it just screams “STOP!” As in “OMG STOP THIS CRAZY GUTS GAME PLZ!”

Totally pick this game up as it really is a hidden gem seeing that it was never released outside of Japan. If you want to spoil it for yourselves, you may always check out the movie, Sweet Home, as it’s online with subtitles and it’s alright as horror movies go. For me, I am excited as I have ordered the strategy guide that is in full Japanese, but has lots of hand drawn art featuring the actors/characters from the game and movie as well as screen captures with lots of information. Once this comes in I’ll be showing it off on my stream.

Ew Monsters.

Tune in Tuesdays and Wednesdays when I’ll be playing thru this game. I started streaming more during the week to help play thru some of the games I have in my backlog and I should be posting up a poll soon to see which game I will play thru next in my weeks to come! You can follow me on Twitch here

Comic Con

My good buddy Greg and I checked out the Hamilton Comic Con on Saturday morning last week and we had a BLAST. It’s been a very long time for me visiting a comic con and at first I was a bit shy asking if I could take people’s photos, but as the day progressed I calmed down a bit and I got to meet a bunch of neat people who had some really stand out costumes. I actually found some amazing deals on some games that I picked up including Lord of the Sword for the Sega Master system complete in box.

Funny that I didn’t pick up many comic books, but I am finding that the more cons I go to its less about the books and more about what crazy crud people can sell at their booths. I’m totally alright with that as I need more crazy crud and video games in my life.

July Giveaways & Dank Art

Dank Art

LordBBH got a very good evening in Mame roulette last night as I seemed to have made a lot of Dank Art. I almost did one piece per game. I guess that makes up for last week? Hopefully some of these ideas will find their way into something polished now that I have my iPad & can really start to make these little ideas into something bigger. I’m really digging the Dangerous Seed Shmup & I would like to see that one larger.

I am also a sucker for drawing Street Fighter II characte so I gotta sketch out a few of my favorite faces :3

Macaw45 played out a few PC 98 adventure games as well as an obscure PS1 adventure JRPG game Bealphareth over the weekend where due to the mistake of choosing the worst weapon ever (the axe) Macaw had to play the first 5 levels over again but with a character who could use a spear (because axe

I finally made an effort to draw out the horrible looking Man Babies from that Mug Crushers game that Chuboh has been keen on playing on his frequent Jank Arcade streams. I also saw one night Chuboh was firing up a C64 emulator but I was so exhausted last week that I missed it. I’m always a huge fan of weird & obscure stuff and Chuboh certainly sets the bar when it comes to Jank games.

img_3521

One of the SGDQ runs I really wanted to watch this year was the Tetris Block which featured KevinDDR and a few other amazing players who are super hardcore into Tetris. It’s always an incredible show when you get to see some of the top ranking players in the US play this type of game. Often when I show people I work with the videos from past events they just stop and stare unable to even to unwind the thought process these players go thru each time they jump into a session.

img_3522

MURPHAGATOR fired up one of the best arcade games ever (as voted by myself & my pal Greg) Alien vs Predator. Growing up as a kid almost everything Alien’s related scared the snot out of me. I missed out on some of the best action horror movies of my parents generation because I was too busy being a little weak baby. However, I am working on a bunch of crazy dank art which features this game as it’s one of the best arcade games you could ever pick up. Try it out!

IMG_3658

I’ve been working on a few commissions and been toying around with a few new ideas that I wanted to feature in upcoming issues of my Zine. This piece that I worked on last Sunday on my twitch stream of an older idea I fleshed out two years ago as a gift for my friends Dan & Lindsay. I kinda wanted to go back to that idea and see if I could do something neat with the background as it’s been a while I’ve put a lot of high detail in a good landscape.

The amusing thing about this piece is that people actually know where this game is from since I normally draw/paint obscure stuff. However I could just say the game in question is Glovius and keep it obscure.

IMG_3597

I’ve also been playing around with my iPad Pro and using it as a tablet to draw some digital Dank Art. With the iPad there’s so many chances to go back & improve something that isn’t looking right may that be an arm or an eye. I won’t be giving up on watercolours anytime soon, but I am trying out more tablet creations so make sure you catch those as I drop them on my twitter feed.

DANK ZINE

IMG_3567

It’s only the fourth month into this amazing project and I can’t tell you enough how happy I am for doing it. It’s turning into more of a magazine with more people contributing to it and I’m starting to have issues juggling the content.

Goati, who is this months featured streamer, gave away 4 issues on his Sunday stream where he invited viewers to draw him or a Megadrive Game for one. I should be mailing those out this week along with a few other Dank orders.

If you want to get your hands on a copy of my Zine you can always follow me on twitter and test your luck on one of my raffles/give aways. However, the best way to get a copy of my Zine is to subscribe and back the project on my Patreon. I do sell the books in the Dank Shop, but you end up saving way more on shipping and get access to all the freebies and added gifts when you do subscribe on my Patreon. It’s also the best place where I am set up to take commissions so if you wan to get a special one of a kind piece of artwork done this is the best and cheapest way to get my Dank Art.

Keep me making Dank Art!

Summer months never slow down

Dank Art

I spoke to LordBBH this morning about last nights Monday Roulette stream and he told me it was possibly the worst stream he’s ever done. I don’t think so as I was highly entertained and popped off a few fun Dank Arts. That’s the luck of the draw with a Mame roulette, you are never sure what’s going to come up.

IMG_3350

REGGIE GIVE US MOTHER 3!

Oh yeah, Reggie. Heh.

Chuboh actually enjoys pulling out those rotten game from the trash that BBH tosses and features them in a “Jank” game night. The best of the trash pile, though I have seen Chuboh play Amiga games and awesome old PC stuff I enjoyed as a child.

SGDQ 2017 took place last week and I did some Dank Art for a few runs that I did catch. I was lucky to get Wednesday off so I stuck around for the Star Tropics & Kirby Dreamland 2 stuff on that day. I won’t get into all the details of SGDQ as I know Aquas is working on a big article for my Zine about it, so I’ll just post up my art so you can enjoy it if you missed it.

Macaw45 picked up a few PC 98 games after what seemed like a whole month of just builders and PS1 games. I’ve been trying to emulate PC 98 games myself yet because I’m on a Mac set up is more than just running an emulator and loading the game. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to get one working on my set up or else I’ll be stuck working out a PC system to play games such as EVO.

IMG_3370

In amazing news I finally saved up enough money to get my new iPad Pro 10″ and I am quite happy with it. A few years back I threw out all the sketch books I has since high school. Yes! I kept all of them under the guidance by teachers to never throw my old work out. That’s a load of hogwash by the way. If you like a great idea in your sketch book, tear it out & save the sketch but get rid of that old stuff. I now have an expensive sketching machine but it also helps me blog on the go as I am doing right now as well to help me out at work when I am posting things for social media. Really I just wanted a laptop I could sketch on and this was it. Expect more iPad sketches to happen!

DANK ZINEIMG_3511.JPG

The 4th issue finally arrived! This issue marks a new start for my Dank Zine as now I am featuring work by not only myself, but work from other people within the gaming community. The amazing cover this month is done by CyRaptor and he streamed the creation of it over a few days on his stream. Aquas also contributed an article about the fan game Ghosts ‘n Demons which he speed ran at SGDQ wich is really amusing and a must if you’re a fan of the series. This months featured streamer is Goati_ all the way from Rome Italy and his endeavours playing Sega games and pulling together the upcoming Nintendont marathon happening soon.

My little Dank Zine has been slowly growing and it’s getting bigger and better each month as I keep adding in more artists, more content and more articles for your enjoyment. If you want to get a subscription make sure you back my Patreon and you won’t miss an issue! Also, backing the Patreon means shipping is included as well as giveaways and other pieces if Dank Art. If you don’t back, you can still buy back issues Zine thru my Dank Shop but you won’t get any of the freebies and included shipping.

End of the Week DANK ART Wrap up June 16 2017

DANK ZINEimg_2636Woa! My Dank Zine is really starting to pick up and now I have almost twice as many subscribers! Thank you so much! I have put together a little shop page on my blog where it has all the info except for the info that isn’t there. You can either back my Patreon or buy issues one by one (though you’ll save $$$ with the shipping if you back the Patreon). I will also post up any posters, prints and any special sales of individual work on that page so please check it out!

Legionnaires Arcade @Chuboh

Chuboh was playing himself in an arcade game called Legionnaires and since I have been following him he’s shaved off his beard & it’s fully grown back already lol. Chuboh plays a lot of fun stuff from very obscure arcades to Amiga games on his stream. I for one am all about more people streaming older Amiga stuff as that was a system I always heard my friends talk about but never really got a chance to experience it for myself. I currently have a very secret collection of old computers though I had to sell off a few to make space in my place. For now, emulation is the best way to go when it comes to most of the classic computer games out there for me.

Trap’s birthday is today! I’m sure he’s 200 years old & only ages once every quarter century due to a special osmosis process that only he and few other people from his home planet are capable of doing. Ok thats not true but what is true is that it is his birthday and I hope he gets roaring dunk & wakes up the next day hugging a trash bin. That’s the sign of a perfect birthday. Now is also a great time to catch Trap streaming because he has been doing a lot of it this past week so if you want to see live streams from actual arcade equipment, Trap’s the one to follow.

img_2566

Combatribes Arcade @MURPHAGATOR

Speaking about streaming from actual arcade cabs, MURPHAGATOR finally has a capture coming from his cabs meaning his reign of ghetto-cams are over for now. Murph will be featured in an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine about streaming from Arcade cabs as well as Trap as owning an arcade cab has always been a project/dream in itself for me. I’m sure there are lots of people out there too who want to know more about getting into collecting arcades or who do it already and enjoy reading that stuff.

img_2605

Wonderboy 3 Lion Suit @Goatistream

Goati was playing thru Wonderboy 3 on Sunday when I was catching up on a lot of Dank Art commissions and I sat down and drew him this Dank Lion suit. Goati is featured in an upcoming issue of my Dank Zine where I sit down with him and talk about the Megadrive, Amiga games, Europe and his online Twitch event, Nintendon’t. I participated last year and I hope I can again this year and it’s basically a fun few days of non-stop streams featuring everything that isn’t Nintendo. Registration is up right now so if this is something that you’d like to take part in, please follow Goati and read up on the event on his Twitch page.

Macaw45 has been on a huge building high for a few weeks now exploring such games like A-Train, The Sims & even this adorable garden/dating sim for Japanese Windows 95 called ___. They apparently they made this a lewd dating sim at first but the game proved to be very popular with everyone that they made a “safe” non-lewd version of the game for everyone to enjoy. Funny how that worked backwards. I totally missed the stream where Macaw was playing thru Sim Earth which is one of my top games as a kid but even with a strategy guide open he couldn’t figure it out. I feel like often I am the only person who fully understands how this game works, so I’ll probably show off how to play this game on a upcoming Sunday Stream. Oh yes, there was Smash TV as well,

I personally enjoy it when LordBBH gets a fighting game on Roulette because I enjoy making Dank Art to the fighters the best. I also enjoy all the cute and then more tragically silly elements to a game as well which is why you’ll see Dank Art for those first. I should play up on a few of my fave fighters so if a viewers choice comes up or if he’s taking requests I could suggest some cool games with really cool characters I want to sketch. Out of all my BBH Dank Arts, I have to say I like the Victory Road one the best cause it was rather unexpected and rather amazing.

Collecting

img_2521My wall of systems is growing! I recently added a Turbo Duo to my classic console collection as well as finding a really good beater shelf to stick them all on. At least things are starting to look a bit more put together then how it was before. Also a new system means all new games to collect!

This is why if you have been tuning into my streams this 2017 year that I have been playing thru so many PC-Engine games on my emulator as I wished to know which games were going to be worth my money. When it comes to buying games I am mostly just interested in playing them, so I’m not about getting things in sealed packages or original anything. If I can, sure but it’s not important. I should go a bit more into depth with the story behind my Duo over the weekend when I try to play catch up on a few things.

Bumbling birthdays and other celebrations

It was my birthday and I’ve had such a crazy week recovering from my back injury, seeing family and just getting a whole lot of work done for my jobs. I held a super cool contest on my twitter where I asked my followers to draw me their own Dank Art from their own favourite games and tweet them at me! It was really fun to see all the dank work come in so thank you very much to everyone who participated. I actually didn’t choose the winners (if it was up to me everyones a winner) so instead I asked the oldest friend I have, Greg. Winners of my Dank Art contest would either receive a free issue of my Dank Zine or a limited edition art print of one of my pieces. Here are the winners!

Congratulations to @CyberGunk  and @reccanti for your lovely Dank Art! You both win issues of this month’s Dank Zine & I will be contacting you shortly to get your shipping address. Thank you so much to everyone who participated and drew me Dank Art. I love looking at your work and I’d like to encourage others to get into it and start drawing and painting on Twitch or simply do what I do and draw to your favourite streamers. Thank you again and thank you for all your wonderful art :3

DANK ZINE

image

OMG the THIRD ISSUE of my Zine is being printed right now and it’s all about Pinball, plushies and of course the Dank Art you know and love. I got to speak with the pinhead of pinball himself, Dead Flip about his love of the game, his story of how he got into streaming and what sort of things he’s up to. I also got to speak with Eyes5 who is an incredible seamstress and dressmaker who is known in the gaming community for her plushies! I own a few plushies from Eyes myself and I will say they are some of the most special huggable things I have. If you want to get this issue I’ll have them up for grabs in my online store once they have shipped. In the meantime you can go back my Patreon and subscribe to my Dank Zine where you can get all my interviews, Dank Art and writings once a month delivered to your mail box.

Dank Art

Macaw45 got back into playing a bunch of fun SuperFamicom games after spending a day discovering this one explorer game. The explorer game was really interesting where you were some 16th century guy trying to set up trade routes and discover the world and all the unique items around the globe. If you are looking for some obscure games, Macaw has it. He also started up this one game called Stealth where it was set in the Vietnam war and you have to find enemy snipers in the forest while not taking damage in a turn based action JRPG style. If I had seen the box I’d probably pass it up myself but the game had some really neat elements to it after Macaw gave it a few goes. The best game he played thru was Super Keirin where you play as a professional gambler who bets on bike races at the velodrome in town and you spend your money upgrading your apartment and life with goodies you buy from your winnings. I saw him play thru this game once before maybe two years ago when I first started following Macaw & I bought the game from his playthru alone. Since I just bought a Super Famicom of my own I can finally attempt to do runs of this game myself, though it will be hard as I don’t read Japanese. This is a must for anyone who wants to pick up a game for a fan translation as its super addictive like Harvest Moon but in a lot of ways better.

LordBBH is having his Viewers Choice Extravaganza this Saturday and made the announcement during his Monday MAME Roulette stream. Since it’s been a rather busy week for me I only have a few BBH Dank Arts to share, but I did mail out a bunch of special BBH-themed Dank Arts to six of my lucky twitter followers who happened to see my contest. I’m always looking to give out my Dank Art to help brighten the day, so if you want to try your luck and see if you can win one make sure you watch my Twitter. As I have been super productive with my Zine I will be having a HUGE contest soon where I will be giving out free issues of the Zine as well as posters and so on! I love giving gifts so make sure you’re watching my twitter so you can win.

Aquas had his 3,000 follower special and decided he was going to do a 24 hour stream where he would play thru a bunch of his favourite games. As I was crazy busy I tuned in when I could and lucky for me I was watching when he was doing his Contra 3 runs and when he was playing a few PC Engine titles such as Air Zonk. Yes! Aquas was doing speed runs in a marathon stream because he’s a beast. I actually got a chance to sit down with Aquas and talk a bit about him for an upcoming issue of Dank Zine.

img_2076I keep talking about how much of an old Beat’em-up fan I am so whenever MURPHAGATOR has a stream going where he’s doing a run of them I’m going to race over to my computer & watch. I never really got into Final Fight when I was a kid as I was a Streets of Rage kind of girl, but I used to thin Final Fight was very progressive for having Poison who was a bad-guy & a woman. Well, I thought she was a woman because it turns out she is really a trans-woman which they say they did to get around the whole idea that punching women is a bad thing. I don’t think switching the gender changes anything, but it is cool that Poison is the first popular and openly trans-gender video game character out there. When I was a little kid I used to think that Poison could be on any of those talk shows when they did the whole “I used to be a zero but now I’m a hero” where they would pit a bully to come on the show and they’d come face to face to the nerdy kid they hurt all thru school and it’s one of those “oOOoOh Look at me now, bitch!” moments. I used to watch those shows and think maybe that could be me when I get older as I always thought of myself of being very plain, unattractive and nerdy due to the amount of bullying I went thru myself. Poisons of the world unite and take back the beautiful streets one right-hook after spin-kick!

Taking the A-Train to fail town with @Goati

The next issue of my Dank Zine will feature this guy here, Goati who hails from Rome Italy. Goati is in the middle of playing every Megadrive game out there which is a challenging feat as there’s a lot. I used to think I knew Sega games until I interviewed Goati but my knowledge is peanuts next to this guy. The best things about following the retro community are the diverse global connections we share within it. I now have friends all over the world just from streaming on Twitch and thats a cool feeling. Rumour has it that Goati is getting ready to start up another Nintendon’t event, so if you wanna get into that event make sure you contact him.

Birthday Stuff

My friends Sarah and Greg came over for my birthday and we got MAME working on my iMac!! The other cool thing was Sarah & I got to go to my favourite place, Mountsburg. It’s a Raptor sanctuary and I have been coming here ever since I was born so I have a very close and personal attachment for the park. When I was a little girl we had so many hawks, eagles and vultures that I could see without even leaving my house. I used to play games with my mom where we would count how many Birds of Prey we found just by driving around. That’s not the case now as it’s very rare to see these birds.

I’ve always been especially fond of raptors and owls and when I was 5 my grandmother got me the book, Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat. Mowat was her favourite author and I think she new him as at that time (the 1930’s) everyone knew everyone in Windsor Ontario. Mowat was the sort of guy who was very in tune with nature and what we should do about preserving it.

It really was one of the best days so far of 2017 for me. I don’t get many chances to see my friends or go for nature walks up on the escarpment, so when I get to do both it’s a real treat for me. I’m so glad I have such great friends who have stuck by me forever.

Here’s the special Birthday moment I shared with Greg, Sarah and a little shout out to my good pal Tony who wanted to be there but needed to be elsewhere. I was thinking about you and the family all weekend, buddy- so no worries and i’ll see you soon :3

Maybe this time I’ll get it right

Stupid me took a spill down my stairs last week. All the way down the stairs on my ass. I hurt my back again and was out for the entire long weekend(booooooo). It hurt a lot, but I managed to get some work done, just nothing for my blog.

In saying that, there’s a lot to talk about! The big news is that this Friday is my birthday and I am having a contest. Just draw me your own Dank Art of your favourite game, tweet it at me before Saturday at 11:59 pm you can win a free issue of my Dank Zine! Already a subscriber? If you already back my patreon, you can win a print of the poster I made for LordBBH for his 1CCBBH event he held last weekend. I originally said Friday, but since I’m so late updating my blog I decided to extend the date to the last possible minute. The winner will be chosen on my stream in some sort of ceremony- most likely me dancing around & clapping my hands thanking you for making my day.

Speaking about my Dank Zine, you still have until the end of this month to get in for the Third Issue featuring a player-profile with pinball’s pinhead Deadflip. This guy from Chicago is helping to make Twitch a better place with his pinball streams. I also got a chance to ask the talented Eyes5 from Metroidhat.com fame a few questions on a few plushie projects she has on the go. Plus you get pages of Dank Art to enjoy! Every issue keeps getting better so make sure you back the patreon to get yours.

LordBBH had his first BBH1CC-athon last weekend on May 20th and 21st where his plans were to 1 Credit Clear from a selection of games. It’s all titles that he’s familiar with, as well as a few risk-taking titles to keep it interesting (Space Harrier!). I made a cool poster to help promote it plus it was an excuse to make a poster! If you want the poster, you can buy it here!

Since I was a scrub & I missed so many blog updates I’m just going to dump the all the Dank Art that has accumulated over the weeks by streamer so that people can find the ones they want and enjoy them.

BBH’s player profile is featured in the May issue of Dank Zine where I sit down with him and talk a bit of what it was like being a kid when arcade games were cool, what it’s like to stream MAME Arcade games on twitch and a few of his top picks for those looking to get into playing arcades. If you want to get an issue with BBH’s interviewI set up a way where you can get back issues made to print here.

Macaw played thru a strange bunch of dank building games that were from all over the place. German Windows 95 stuff, DOS games and even these strange train -city builders for the PC-98. There was a day he streamed SIM Isle attempts and the music in that game is quite excellent. You’ll probably never see anyone else show this much passion for really obscure stuff

Macaw also streamed thru this crazy Sci-Fi adventure game called Zeta for the PC-98 in a crazy stream that went well over 9 hours. I remember almost a year ago when he was showing off the box to this game along with a few others he picked up in an online auction. It’s a very stylised space drama where a team goes to investigate the ruins of a failed experiment into the psyche that gets really twisted at the end. Macaw played thru the entire game only to reveal that it was only a build up to show off what he was really excited about getting which was its follow-up sequel titled Nirvana. There’s a lot of twist for all the plot points in both games, so if you have the time go check it out.

img_1195I’ve been following Abs for almost a year now and back before he had a lot of streamers my buddy Aquas told me to go follow him as he was starting to play thru Earthbound which is one of my favourite games. Abs now primarily streams in the mornings and from Monday to Friday playing thru SNES games, so check him out if you’re into 16bit goodness. I made this Wolverine Dank Art the morning he was playing thru the SNES game which Abs then turned around and made into “official Dank Box Art”. Good stuff, Abs!

Trap played some Twin Eagle on his candy cabs one weekend which was really cool. He now lives in a seabed of arcades which is kinda cool. He showed me photos of his apartment & the only surface that wasn’t carpet or arcade machine was this ironing board I think he forgot to put away. Anyway Trap is living one of my dreams which is to own several cool arcade machines and to have sort of a mini arcade set up in the home. I’m looking forwards to working on something cool with Trap for my zine in the upcoming months, so make sure you stay tuned for that one. I also have another pinball issue coming up where I am going to be talking to a few cool pinball collectors and how they live with such a crazy hobby.

1,000 Viewer Special

I started streaming over 6 years ago to celebrate playing video games with my friends in a social and engaging way. However, it’s only been rather recent in the last two years that I have been streaming more frequently. I recently just hit 1,000 followers.

Yay! I guess thats an achievement. I was never really sure if I wanted to do anything more then just share how much fun video games are with people when it comes to streaming. This year things have sort of changed as I have my Dank Zine, my art, and so many cool friends that I have made just by streaming on twitch. Thank you so much for sticking by me and being my friend. For the next six years lets just keep streaming and sharing more fun moments online :3

I got so busy this week I thought I’d never make it back

All last week I was knee-deep in my history textbooks and clippings to get a large history project ready for one of my jobs. This year is Canada’s 150th birthday and it’s my home town’s 160th birthday. All the dates fall around a few days shy of each other so we’re planning a bunch of stuff for the occasion. I’ve had a good past with my local Historical Society and I used to sit on their board a few years back. Preserving history and educating people about this sort of thing is a passion of mine and in 2012 I wrote an interactive eBook that was featured in a huge exhibit for national Culture Day week.

I am happy I am done this huge project as it took so much time away from all my regular work and from updating my blog. I am thankful I did manage to get a lot of my other projects finished and off my plate before this week started as I don’t think I would have been able to manage if I didn’t.

DANK ZINE

Issue No 1 of my Dank Zine

I had more copies printed of the first issue of the Dank Zine as a bunch of people started asking me after I placed the order if they could get issues. If you’d like a back issue you can email me. I’m trying to set up a shop area to my blog so I can start selling the Zine quicker and easier to those who are not part of the Patreon. Speaking of new issues….

img_1276

Issue No 2 of my Dank Zine

The second issue is already printed and I’m starting to get each order packaged and shipped to all my backers! I’m now up to 32 colour pages and sticking with the better printing as everyone loved the quality of the first issue. This issue features player interviews with LordBBH, artist and WWF Super fan Anthony Brennan from Qooplo paper toys and all the best Dank Art from the month of April. If you like my work and want to keep me making Dank Art, please back my Patreon!

DANK ART

LordBBH had a decent Monday Roulette stream featuring the random choices made thru the random game picker. A lot more classic games came up this time which is a good thing for me cause I love them. The really dank Noah’s Arc game came up where you had to fetch two of every animal and bring it back onto the arc. I was unaware that there were Bible themed arcade games out there but hey, you hang around long enough during a BBH stream you’re going to learn something about arcade games. My other favourite dank art from BBH’s streams was the Pinball one I made on Thursday for the BBH raffle. At first I was shocked that someone actually requested this game, but soon after drawing the dank art for it I found myself playing pinball on my computer. What can I say? I like pinball :3

Alfred Chicken on Amiga @chuboh

Chuboh was playing some classic Amiga games this week which is always a rare treat as I don’t see many people streaming Amiga stuff. I just started following Chuboh recently as I saw he not only was into arcade games, but DOS and Amiga games as well. When I first started this blog I wanted not only to have a home for all the Dank Art that I make for people’s streams but also to highlight those people who I do art for and have a list of some of the best retro players out streaming today. It can get a bit hard if you’re looking for games and players and don’t know where to start, so in part of making a bunch of Dank Art I’m helping to connect people to players to get them some exposure as well. Speaking about dank old games…

Macaw45 was playing German DOS games and I don’t think anyone is streaming that stuff (unless there is a German guy who’s totally streaming dank DOS stuff from his basement but I have yet to find him). I made a lot of the Doman Dank Art from the chat’s suggestions as I was having a great morning & took suggestions from those participating in chat. I also love drawing ridiculously huge warriors that look awkward and hilarious with their added muscle bulk.

Elvira has video games? Elvira II the Jaws of Cerberus on Amiga @bouphe

Have you seen Bouphe yet? Bouphe is AWESOME. She’s from the UK and plays old DOS and Amiga games, usually more on the sexier side of things. It’s always great to see girls streaming on twitch but even better when they are playing old dank retro games that no one else is. Bouphe is mega cute and very charming and I caught her last week playing this ridiculous Elvira game for the Amiga. Check her out if you’re not following her already!

In the Studio

I wanted to try out new techniques in the studio this weekend, so I got out my desk easel and experimented with tilting my canvas. It’s necessary to move your space around when you work with it and with watercolour using gravity to help pull the pigment into the water and across the paper. Though I draw every day and I have been painting and selling my work for a while I always try to revisit training techniques as often as I can. Even though I know all this stuff from years of trial and error revisiting lessons and challenging myself to show improvement is the smart way to get better. I would say on any given day I am putting at minimum 3 hours of drawing time in but once a week I will challenge myself and just do “study work” so that I can make mistakes and learn from them.

IMG_1128

Something cool arrived in the mail. This is a Zine by Simon Hanselmann who is well known for his Megg Mog & Owl comics. I follow him on Twitter and he’s one of my favourite cartoonists right now. He’s also really into self printing Zines and I try to collect each one that he comes out with. Each zine is from a limited run and in the case of this one it’s been embellished by Simon himself so I have something unique. I always try to support those who inspire me, so if you haven’t seen his work I recommend you check it out.

GTA Game Expo

my buddy Greg & I took a drive over to Mississauga to check out the GTA Game Expo which was a retro game collectors sell/swap meet I talked about earlier in the year. This was a crazy fun event and I always love going to shows like these as it’s a fun way to find games. Often the titles and things I am looking for that I can’t find or see anywhere else pop up at shows like these, but my biggest problem going now is that it takes me longer to find what I want to buy as I own almost everything :p

I am always looking for imports and cheaper PC Engine stuff and I was happy to say I got in connection with someone local who has a LOT of PC Engine stuff for sale. He was quite impressed that I went for War of the Dead- he tried to sell it to me as “Top down Zelda adventures style game” but I said “omg honey no- thats the worst way to describe this game- it’s an action adventure RPG where you fight as a sexy girl with a shotgun on an island where zombie guts monsters are eating everyone and you save at the church.”

Sure, the prices are not what they used to be, but if you do your leg work and know your stuff then these events are more of a fun thing to do in the afternoon. We sure had fun and I can’t wait for the next show to go to.
